Holo Red impressions

No, connect the USB output of the Red to the DAC. That is to make sure you don‘t have the preemphasis issue. After connecting the DAC via USB you might have to turn the Red off and on again. In the web frontend of the Red you should see a new output device option for the direct stream DAC. Select it and save. Then in roon, you should also see it as new endpoint. Stream to it and switch to the USB input at your DAC.

And don’t forget to use the proper number 25 Tinfoil hat. Sideways orientation preferred.

why keep it in? remove it or just pull out an inch so it turns off. it generates noise. if the Red works you dont need it right? so that is the end goal of keeping the red.

Point understood.

But, the plan is to figure out which sounds better and pulling the Bridge network card is on the Red demo agenda. Having the Holo Red simply work, is not good enough.

That said, the difference in sound quality I am experiencing so far cannot, logically, be tied to any noise the Bridge is bringing to the party, IMO/IME.

The current hope is that the Holo Red is a superior source for streaming everything except MQA, such that I can replace the Bridge and use the current real estate it occupies in the DAC to house the JK Richards internal power adaptor board. I have one (and the requisite LPS and cable) patiently waiting on hot standby.

If the Red is not up to snuff, I will likely take a different route (not yet plotted).

In any event, more listening time is required and I will eventually get it sorted.

Appreciate the input…

Good suggestion…

Keep 'em coming.

Thanks.

The key is to STOP reading that manual as soon as it starts to talk about loading the operating system onto a micro SD card. As you’ve come to find out, the OS is PRE-LOADED on the card, you just pop it into the slot, turn on the RED, and leave the card inside.

Yep. Believe it or not, I figured out pretty early on that the OS loading instructions were N/A.

Cheers.

If anything, I’d say mine is on the bright side. DIP SWITCH settings are currently:

1-off
2-on
3-on
4-on

Thanks Mike.

All adjustments are on the table. I’ll try changing the DP SWITCH settings if that makes sense.

Are you using the I2S output from the Red? I am pretty sure, that’s all the switch settings “care about”.

RSVP.

Yes, using i2s. I’ve tried a variety of switch settings. I2s has always worked, but sometimes I get a “pop” when manually starting a track.

Thanks. I experienced the “POP!” once. Pretty loud - not sure if it is a threat to the system components or not though…

Mine’s up and running via AES to the Aqua La Voce S2 and out of the box sounds pretty good. No dullness at all and with this DAC can’t try I2S as it uses an RJ45 cable for connection to the Aqua transport and streamer only. Just using mConnect HD and Airplay so far but intend to try JPlay for IOS via the free trial to see how it works.

Maybe change the settings to only include what you are listening to. Think you had lots of boxes checked on the config.php page…no idea if this helps or hurts, but things started rocking after removing UPNP (which is not often thought of as safe anyway).

Good thinking.

Done.

Will listen later.

My Red just arrived. I need to go to UPS to ship the MK2 before I can play with it.

Maybe I missed something… why are you shipping the Mk2?

Vince just made a profit from selling it, and there were over 2k views on his AD. He is a popular guy!

Oh yeah I remember now. It’s hard to keep up with Vince’s adventures in sound

There’s always something going on. Today I returned my Hiby R6 III and bought a Sony NW-ZZ707 to replace it.
