Holo Red impressions

Besides the Holo Red that folks here mainly seem to recommend, I had good use with a Silent Angel Munich M1T. I had the 8GB version so could scan in my own library without using Roon. The app was similar to Bluesound’s. It was limited to DSD128 though. But that is not a problem for most people. I moved on into HQPlayer land. But sometimes think back fondly on the simple Silent Angel days.

No problems with the Red for me. I’m still interested in the AirLens though…

Rock steady here to with both mConnect and JPlay.

My Red has been issue free using I2S to a MkII.
USB on the other hand gives me occasional dropouts on DSD256 material.
A number of us have reported this issue and we have a variety of streamers so I’m thinking it may be a MkII problem.

More likely a USB problem.

I still haven’t updated firmware or whatever caused so many hiccups since purchase. My Red to Denafrips is great during sports commercials in the theater.

I haven’t had streaming in the A-game system since my OG fanless linux streamer into Matrix bit the dust. Bought the AirLens in Boulder today. Worked quickly!

Weird thought on streamers: I do not listen to music as much when I know I’m confined to my own stacks. Let the cards fall where they may.

From my AirLens commentary yesterday:

"Unless there is some unforeseen functionality setback in the next day or two, the jury has already reached its verdict: The Holo Red is bound for Boulder and the AirLens is staying put.

Most of my familiar “demo” music is being rendered with a better sense of “realism”, warts and all.

The most encompassing comment I can think of to describe what I am hearing so far is I am perceiving new subtleties on almost every track."

Keeping in mind that I perceive most, if not all, of the successful improvements/upgrades in my system these days to be incremental (as opposed to sea-changing) steps: The Holo Red has a kind of slow and muddled presentation compared to the AirLens.

So, I am not saying the Red does not sound great. It does. But to my ears, with my somewhat limited “streamer” experience, the “hierarchy” is currently:

AirLens > Bridge II > Holo Red.

YMMV.

I’ll give the AirLens some time to settle in and become my reference sound. Then I’ll swap the Holo Red back in the signal chain to see if my current listening impressions hold.

FYI.

Wasn’t that long ago that Red was the greatest

FWIW, I was kind of non-plussed w/r/t the Holo Red from the get go; and addressed my experience putting it through its paces in this thread.

Prior to the arrival of the AirLens yesterday, I had defaulted to my tried and true Bridge II Ethernet card.

Cheers.

Did anyone actually say it was “the greatest”? I must have missed that. Is it good? Absolutely. Is it great for the price? Oh hell yes.

A great option for those of us can’t drop thousands of dollars every time a new video review is released on youtube

Yep. It is very good, in my experience.

And, if I had a system configuration that required it, I think its DDC capability is really compelling.

Cheers.

A lot of folks here and elsewhere created sales fervor

That’s not a lot of ppl probably, maybe not even a hundred…

Or maybe about the the same as the BII. :slightly_smiling_face:

Actually, arguably not quite its equal in my view….

Arguably, original microRendu (from 2016) replacing the BII > BII and maybe more or less the Red as well if one is a slightly better or worse than the other.

It seems Sonore lost their way actually improving the original microRendu when it might have earned more attention in 2023 if it had been painted red and shipped from China.

For the $$ the Red with a SR purple fuse is very good.
I used mine with Jussi’s NAA OS and HQPlayer and had zero issues running 1.4/1.5 MHz 20 Bit PCM.
My Sonore Sig Rendu SE was still better, but at a much higher price.
I find the Air Lens concept very interesting, but I am currently going in a different direction that I am quite happy with.

Hi folks

Question -
has anyone set up the Red as a combined music server / streamer yet?

Not sure if you can direct attach storage or not, depends on how the custom USB IO is hooked up to the CPU, but all it would need is a NAS on the same LAN and the Red could happily run LMS and squeezelite for an all in one solution, hopefully with little detriment to sound given the quality of PSU built in.

You might want to inquire here;

These folks appear to use the Red in a variety of different configurations.

Might add my matrix (as a ddc) and a farad super3 into my mostly inexpensive Red/Denafrips listening path. Strong thoughts on it being worth the time? So many are saying less is more, but nothing exceeds like excess.
