Holo Red impressions

Will be interesting to see if the Red is successful if Holo decides to come out with an upscale streamer in a full size Spring style case with the upgraded power supplies and the proprietary USB module used in their DAC’s. I suspect as with their DAC’s the USB output will be their primary focus and the DDC capability will go away. Price would likely be somewhere between the price of the Red and the top level Spring 3. As Alvin at Vinshine keeps a close eye on the market wouldn’t be surprised to see a competitor for the Red come out of the Denafrips factory soon.

Very interested in what you think of it.
I’m trying to decide between the Red and Lumin mini.
Cost difference makes me hope the Red holds it’s own

Exactly why I ordered. Plus a quick sale if I dont like and only lose $50-75 or so for trial. Well worth the try

Vince, any thoughts thus far?

It’s still not here. I must admit that I am sorta glad it’s not here yet. I’ve been playing with our Bartok pretty much non-stop. I’ve been comparing the network connection against the USB input.

It’s hard work, but I am trying to make the best of it.

I have yet to regret a DAC upgrade.

Any plans within the forseeable future?

Actually I spent a lot of time with a highly regarded and way more expensive DAC and it didn’t make me want to change to it. It lives in the $50K price point.

It needed the other two pieces for an extra
$50k to make its magic and temp you!

I believe it’s a good thing to remain curious and investigative. In every aspect in life.
There will be other alternative routes that may bring that special next step to your door.
It just isn’t that moment yet and one never knows upfront when its about. That’s where part of the fun is.

I have done more than my share of trading up. I believe the setup I have will do until my MBL Extremes arrive.

Whoa!!

I wonder if the more or less omnidirectional MBLs will play nice with the BACCH stuff?

Good for you!

Nope, they are mutually exclusive. The interesting thing to me is the Extremes largely accomplish the same sound as the Bacch, without the Bacch. The Bacch tries to control reflections, and the Extremes are all about reflections.

Anyone have advice on this?

With the Holo Red/DSD Mk1 combo whenever there’s a format change (DSD → PCM, PCM 92 → PCM 192, and all vice versa etc), there’s a pop from the DAC.

I never had this issue with the Lumin T2. It’s really, really annoying. And can be loud. Freaks out the dogs. And when you have five dogs laying around the speakers, it’s not a good thing.

Anything that can be done?

wondering if Teds soon to be released (we hope) fix will cover this.

All this upgrading. I bought my DAC in 2016. It’s perfectly fine, I make sure I wind it up every morning.

I actually downgraded from my fabulous Lumin DAC/streamer combo.

Is this a known thing then?
