How about a Wavestream update?

+1

Well, it is under the heading "How about a Wavestream update?"

Something we could try is to set some ADMIN only posts under fixed subjects in announcements. Admin could answer all questions, no matter where they are asked, under these few threads.

Problem with that is admin still has to read everywhere. It does perhaps reduce the number of answers and puts them all under one appropriate title.

any suggestions out there?

Yes

AFAIK, there were plans to fix that. 1.5-2 years ago ;)
amiglic said: Alekz, what do you mean by "Killing unneeded processes on the Bridge" ?

The Bridge is a small computer running Linux. There are some processes that were added for convenience, they eat CPU, but they are not needed to play music. These process can be killed what dramatically lowers the CPU load, what leads to better sound quality.

I posted the info in this thread: http://www.psaudio.com/vanilla/discussion/5414/bridge-0.2.14f , but I'm afraid it's for beta-testers only.

Yes, and a newer forum software to boot.

Vanilla is a bit restrictive in it's options.
We should, in spite of that, be able to satisfy most needs with a bit of thought and discipline.

One challenge is how to maintain the free and open vibe of OUR forum while having a more technical area for "less addicted" forum dwellers who want more "how to" and "what's new" information.

One suggestion way back was to MAINTAIN the SUPPORT area of the PSA web site, which is where almost everyone looks first, and then it is easy to just give the appropriate link to anyone asking in the forum.
That leaves the forum being just a hang out sort of boys club for interested members.

It is about time to deal with this so suggestions are welcome but MY vote is the areas need to be separate BUT the PSA support area needs to be regularly MAINTAINED to make it work.

Whoa… trying to just slip that one in under the radar? Paul will these Bridge MKII fit in the current Bridge location in the PWD or are they going to be outboard ???

“On other fronts we have two wonderfully working Bridge 2 candidates in the works. One we’re actually listening to and playing right now. We’re waiting for the final leg of it, our old friend gapless. We’re told by the designers we should have that code in hand within two weeks. Should that all happen on time (and it never does), we can start laying our the PCB to house the module and perhaps be in X testing next month, depending on schedules.”

Just call me the Stealth.

Candidate number one, that I wrote about, slips right into the back just like the original. Candidate number two would be external but it would also be able to take a HDD directly, USB stick directly, and all sorts of other goodies making it more than just a replacement for the Bridge.

“Whoa” indeed. Very interesting. But PSA is simultaneously proceeding with WaveStream it seems so I take it Bridge 2 would be optional? Or would WaveStream be required for that too?

Hmmm… very interesting Paul…

So Bridge MKII.a is a direct upgrade/replacement of MKI Bridge, and MKII.b is a standalone… version.b sounds very much like the Silent Server of lore…

Well I’ll offer my unasked for opinion… If… big if, the software does what it should, and I’ll go out on limb here and say that I suspect (hope) you guys have learned from the past. I’d recommend that if you can, that you should offer both units.

Offer both because there is a real market for a standalone unit… Just ask Auralic about the immense interest in their new ARIES unit, and offer the original style version for the thousands of folks that have PWD’s that have either thrown in the towel on the original or just want a Bridge that does gapless and doesn’t have the issues of the original, just my thoughts…

But it’s all gonna come down to the SOFTWARE… it’s really just gotta work this time!

Stevem2… PSA will need some kind of software that will allow the units to do gapless and hopefully will make the units more network stable… So I suspect that Wavestream will either be the embedded OS, or it will have to be installed on a NAS or on a computer on the network to make make the units work… Hopefully the current RD on Wavestream will lead to some type of embedded software that is either written into the Bridge or that can be installed on a NAS as third party software, like what Synology offers for their NAS’s… think LMS…

Mmmmm the pot begins to boil. Still only part of the cat is visible. The best parts are still in the bag.

Oops, another slip? It comes in a bag? ~X( :-h

Gordon you are starting to piss me off

I’d almost rather know nothing than have audioboner deflateus

Well I will admit to a Tiny bit of fun in throwing out a tease.

But really just a Tiny bit.

It is not unlike PSA to release info and sometimes even when it is just on paper and then we have to wait, wait and wait.

In this case, from credible sources, including Will [WGLEN], there is a major leap already in the works. I have really only known since late last year and to tell the truth, was not holding my breath for a real delivery date.

The progress has been remarkably on-time and last week I was told to expect a final test unit “any day now”. Other than Paul’s there is [as far as I know] one other unit. Maybe for the Smithsonian?

I will, of course, chime in with my own 2 cents when it is actually running in my rig but my personal expectations are high based on the outrageously logical concept as well as the already convinced auditioners.

So, bottom line, this is too important not to share and shame on me if I did not give at least this “tease” heads up to you guys.

There! OH, and it comes in a bag??? >:)

Paul, are you using the 'Linn uPnP extensions' open source for gapless?
At least we know that other vendors are successful when implementing this (e.g. Pixelmagic Lumin and the new Auralic from what I understand). This seems to be the de-facto standard that may lower the risks and increase the chance of success within a reasonable timeline.

Gee, I hope not.
I got the magic email last week that my "bag" was coming.

Yes, I remember. he he
The goal is to keep it from becoming TOO controlled though.
Cloning other sites is not the PSA style.
Therefore my vote for most of the tech stuff to be on the Support area of the web site and keep the forum kinda loose.
I realize the I am perhaps "without boundaries" but that is due to my alien genetics so as long as it suits the guy who pays the bills around here [PMcG] then whatever the leaders suggest can happen.
It is a 3 part commitment.
Suggest, Implement AND Maintain.
It is more of a commitment than is obvious.
I am very anxious for someone[s] to step forward, take the left seat and say "I have the helm".

I tried. But the top three posters started whining :D
Alekz said: I tried. But the top three posters started whining :D

Sure. part of the challenge. They often whine, perhaps their current habits.
I just have a glass of wine and look at them as teddy bears and fellow Audiophools and it adds a different perspective. They mean no harm and may often cringe when they re-read their own posts. Me included.
We do need to realize that El Heffe has a style that we need to consider and respect. I would not exactly call him disciplined when it comes to this stuff. =))
