I had my pair from ‘85 to ‘98 so I must have thought so. They had stonking upper bass that made Donna Summer’s 12” version of I Feel Love sound fantastic, and stuff with a good bass drums like I’m On Fire by Bruce Springsteen.
They did also have their limitations, were they transparent? No. Did they image well? Not really, it was a bit like Mono Stereo where you could hear different things coming out each channel but no image between the two speakers.
Still it took me many unsuccessful attempts to upgrade them between those years, finally settling on the MLs.
Hmmmm . . .
I currently have and enjoy Monitor Audio GX300s; I’ve had them about a year and a half. They replaced a pair of Linn Helix 2s, with ku-stone stands, that I’ve had since around 2004 (bought them because I had them in the 1990s also).
The only other speaker I remember loving listening to was the ProAc Response 2.5. Simply fantastic. I’d be interested to hear how they compare to my Monitor Audios.
I’ve also had Naim SBLs (VERY fiddly but capable of some great things), Linn Kans, Linn Index (both versions), Epos ES14s, ProAc Response 2, ATC SCM-35, and probably others that I’m not remembering. I also have a pair of Linn Nexus in the basement; one of the tweeters is dead.
I confess to being curious about the forthcoming PS Audio speakers, but they’ll be way out of my price range, so curious will have to do for the moment. Would also be curious to try something like the ProAc D28R/38R/48R. And would also really like to hear a pair of Thiel 3.6 in my room/system.
