iFi LAN iSilencer

I’ve used fiber optic cable between the Roon Core in my NAS to my streamer with great results (galvanic isolation).

I got an iFi LAN iSilencer yesterday, and at $89 with 30 day return policy it seemed like a reasonable experiment.

I played three tracks that I often use to evaluate a component or tweak. “Easy Money” by Rickie Lee Jones, “Poetry Man” by Phoebe Snow, and “Bar and Grill” by Joni Mitchell. I’m very familiar with all three and can easily detect differences if something changes.

I heard the high frequencies more clearly, as if a haze was removed. I could more clearly imagine that the sounds of the instruments were coming from an actual instrument of appropriate size and in a specific space. Finally, it was easier to make out the lyrics being sung. In no way did I detect a change that was negative.

I threw away the packaging as I knew I wouldn’t want to return it and enjoyed the improvement through my normal jazz listening for the evening. It may not work for everybody, but it sure does for me.

If you think it’s better then it is better!

Would you mind sharing where you place the iSilencer in the signal chain

TIA.

It’s in the Ethernet port on the DSD Mk 1. Thought I’d eliminate any noise from the 1m Cat 6 cable from my router as well.

Thanks for the reply.

I had exactly the opposite experience with the iSilencer - nothing improved and I started getting a lot of dropped streams. Removed the iFi LAN iSilencer and the problem went away. I’d call it “iffy” at best :o)

I contacted iFi Customer Support twice for any data supporting their performance claims. They assured me they had it and would send it. Six months later, I have nothing from iFi and they Closed the ticket today.

I conclude that the iFi LAN iSilencer is pure snake oil with no supporting performance data, and far more likely to do harm than good. My recommendation is to avoid the iFi LAN iSlincer as you would COVID. Your mileage may vary.

I don’t recognise this at all.
No drop outs either
In my case, it brought a big improvement.
That’s why I bought a 2nd one.
It seems to me that you have a broken one and I think they should replace it.

That was my thinking as well @adimon.
In fact I purchased the ifs LAN iPurifier Pro, and I was amazed at how much it improved my sound and lowered the noise floor.
Things had a much blacker background and the transparency was greatly improved along with instrument placement across the stage. The center channel was much more defined.

So after listening to the unit for a short time, I came to the conclusion that for even more performance, I needed to purchase their ifs iPower X power supply unit.
When I installed the power supply, it became immediately noticeable of yet another leap in sonic performance.
For me, I find the money very well spent and my Aurender loves what the unit does.
I believe it to be one of the very best tweaks one can do to a system, for not a lot of money.
So for me, it was not snake oil, far from it!
But like always, YMMV…
Happy listening!

I use an iPower Elite PS for my Orbi satellite, and it is plugged into a Puritan PSM156 conditioner. I was pleasantly surprised that it contributed to great improvement on the streaming SQ.

I have only two devices in my system connected to the network. Both have MUON Pro systems attached to them. This seems nice.

Personally, I would love to have the Muon unit. The only thing keeping me from purchasing it is the price, plain and simple! Although,I still went down that rabbit hole with an ifi IPurifier silencer and wow did it make an improvement!but at a more exceptable price.

You may want to look into Stack Audio SmoothLAN Network filter. For the price it is quite a bit better than iFi Purifier.

Yeah, I looked at that particular product and I almost purchased it. But I got an offer to purchase the ifi unit from someone on this forum which I just could not turn down. I am very pleased with it so I have not been looking at other units. Perhaps I need to “test drive” the Stack unit and see how it sounds. Thanks for your input in highlighting the Stack unit. Nothing is telling me that I can’t shift gears if I want too.

I forgot to ask you about how you know about the different/improvement between either of them?
I would’ve very interested in hearing what you have to say about it!

I had used an iFi Purifier sometime ago, and Stack SmoothLan was much more effective in reducing noise than iFi for sure. Of course, now I use a Muon Pro System which is even better, but at a much higher cost.

Contact Josh of Stack Audio and mention my name, and you may get a bit of Donald’s friends discount. I recommend their isolation footers too

No audio device in history here on the Forum was tested and rejected as quickly as that device.

Well, it was compared to iFi Purifier, nothing serious.

It should not be mentioned in the same discussion of the MUON Pro. It is not similar in performance at all. All it is is inexpensive. And not worthy of any expense.

You need to look at this way, it is a $100+ device compared to a $200+ device. There are 10 steps from them to a Muon Pro. Some members here are not into spending that kind of dough here.
