There is a certain kind of management, more and more in evidence over the last couple of decades, that slowly rots any enterprise, public or private, for very short term “gain”.
It’s sad to watch and grim to experience.
But retirement is a very good response to it 
I loved my job until I was managing a larger streetscape project in a busy downtown area. The construction project included infrastructure, roadway, landscape, beautification, and a bunch traffic control of the downtown. It was going 24 hours a day for a two-year period. There were tons of construction and political issues going constantly. As the project manager I slept 4 hours per day on average for two years!
That put me into retirement soon after.
Not as much money but no stress!
