Improvements to this forum

I am at the point where I think it would make sense to spend a few buck upgrading this forum software.

The two things that bug me are:

  1. If I want to respond to a specific post deep in a thread I can only quote that post or reply at the end of the thread. I wish there was a way to reply to a specific post within a thread, though I can't imagine how that works. Has any one seen an example they can point me to where this is working on another forum?
  2. Can't search the forum effectively.
If you have suggestions to improve this forum and can supply examples of how it is working on other forums, please post them here. Just a list of what you want without referencing another forum so I can see it working isn't all that helpful. But with a reference (even a screenshot) that would be a help.

That’s great to hear Paul! I think what you’re looking for is a “threaded” view for the forum. The best example of this I’ve seen is DPReview.com which allows the user to choose either a “flat” view - like our dear forum - or a threaded view. Check it out here.

Another nice thing about this site is the search capability if very robust. One downside I can see with the forum is that it doesn’t re-populate new responses live, but that’s not a big deal on our forum since the threads don’t move at lightning speed. Many forums powered by Disqus enable this and it works well. Here’s an example using MASN which is the media arm for the Orioles and the Nationals:

I would like a Reply button before Quote at the top of each post.

I would also like Quote to quote only that which the last poster wrote. This would avoid nested quotes.

A good search function would be great, but using Google to search using the site function works superbly. E.g., site:www.psaudio.com “usb driver”

I think the Audio Asylum does what you are talking about. You used to have a sub forum there.

Other than the search function, I think it works quite well. I like that it shows me, on the main forum page, what has new posts. Even though the Asylum lets you post under the actual post you are replying to, and may be able to be set up differently, has flexibility, I am not aware of. I prefer how all the posts are shown in a line here, rather than just the title of the replies.

Elk, if there is not one already written, a tutorial on how you search might solve those complaints. Have a link, or if you can say it briefly, put it in, so if I hit search, there it is. Because I seldom, maybe never here, start topics, I don’t use search very often. The thing with wanting people to search before asking a question in a new topic thread, is that if the topic is old, some won’t resurrect it. So, with some topics, you have to accept that they will come up more than once. It used to be storage that made forums want to have no duplicate topics.

I think this forum could be tweaked, but, I for one, do not want it replaced, with any other forum package. Maybe set up a survey, if that is possible to find out what members prefer. But do it in a way that allows you to gather info to specific questions, rather than in a thread like this, where we will all be saying something different, so no consensus.

One thing I found that was odd, I was looking through the FAQ on the site, and found someone had posted a question after the FAQ. I looked at the date, and it was only two days old at the time. I answered the question the best I could, and suggested using the forum. Very likely a newbie to forums. I know, but they still exist. I have a friend that refused to use the internet until just a few years ago. I doubt he has ever joined, or maybe even read a forum.

I have always been amused by Let Me Google That For You.

On the mobile app. side of things…fix the fact that software does not update your browsing history so that only new posts show up when you select the + drop down to see what is new.

Is it a current malfunction or deactivated?
