Innuos Zenith mk3

@Somppsa - any discernible changes between 1.4.4 and 1.4.5 ?

It needs to have internet connection because you need to operate it via tablet or phone. First you need to go to ā€œmy.innuos.comā€ and make all the settings correct and then open some control software where you actually manage and play your music through it. Do you have problem getting LAN to your setup or why you ask that?

I messed up the possibility to give more accurate answer to that because I was using my Lindemann 820S as a dac for a week or so. Innuos-usb-Matrix-xlr-Lindemann.Then I noticed new update is available and switched to DSD dac at the same time. LOL. But from what I remember it sounded like before with DSD I think it sounds even better once again. Quieter background and more detailed 3D sound, might be just my imagination
From Innuos : http://www.innuos.com/en/go/release-1-4-5

How do you guys feel like, does it sound any better?

Most importantly if you haven“t tried ,here comes tip of the day :slightly_smiling_face:
If you use Innuos and Matrix x-spdif2 and hdmi out to DSD dac.

Set Matrix DoP to Native dip switch to Native on. Others off. Then from Innuos settings Native DSD mode on and low latency usb mode on. You are done.

Hit play and be amazed…

Tablets and phones are Wi-Fi, no?

So, can I control via Wi-Fi after set up, if I don’t want to pull music from the inter -webs?

Stubbornly/ignorantly yours,

Hehee ,ah sorry! Now I get it ( maybe ) but it needs to be attached to LAN in any case to operate at any level. Just unplugged LAN cable to try out and I can“t do anything via Wi-Fi.

Still dumbfoundedly yours, thinking why LAN is a problem ?

B/C it is not my LAN… The system I am thinking about adding the Zenith to is in my office, at my place of employment. The Network bandwidth is not technically for personal use.

@Somppsa: Currently, I stream Tidal and Qobuz from my iPhone via Bluetooth and an Auris BluMe HD Bluetooth receiver/converter that feeds a tube DAC. Overall sound quality using iOS devices in this manner is limited and I would like to ā€œup my gameā€. I also spin CDs and SACDs in this rig (SACDs are limed to the player’s ancient, on-board DAC though).

Thanks for the responses/cheers.

That was more enlightening, thanks for telling.I think where you live and work internet usage costs money then? Here we basically just pay monthly for the theoretical max speed and then we can stream wires glowing red.

Zenith will surely be nice upgrade if you can get around LAN problem. Good luck there!

You can’t get round the LAN problem.

You don’t need a tablet or phone. All you need is the IP address on the network, which takes you to the front page. See below.

It is also preferable to load music on it over the network. You can use usb, but that is a pain. The Zen is visible as a network drive and you just drag and drop your music into an Auto-Import file and then got to the Import page and click.

Personally, I first copy downloads onto a QNAP that is used as a backup library and use the network import function.

This all works very well. The InnuOs operating system does not have a browser so it cannot download files from the web. That would require a much larger operating system which is exactly what the device avoids.

For any device to be visible when not connected to a network, it would need a graphics card and I/O port. The whole idea of a lower noise device is to avoid all that functionality. Making it visible on a network only keeps the OS as small as possible.

10-4.

Too bad. I now understand this is inherent to the design/functionality of the kit.

Thanks @Somppsa and @stevensegal .

It needs an IP address, it doesn’t (presumably) need the default gateway, as long as the wifi tablet is on the same IP range. This would stop it accessing the internet but allow control via LAN.
Can it’s IP address be set manually (and not give it the gateway)?
This assumes they are both (for example) on the same WiFi access point.

It’s not just the Innuos, all network based streamers are going to have to be connected to the same network as the control device or they won’t ā€œseeā€ each other and the streamer can’t be controlled. I’ve owned streamers from Auralic, OPPO, Lumin, Teac, and the Bridge II and they all operated under the same principals. Streamer an iPad have to be connected to the same network SSID. Wired or wireless doesn’t make any difference.

Is there any possibility of some sort of Wi-Fi dongle work around? I have unlimited access and pretty good connectivity to the internet via my Sprint plan and my iPhone?

Stubbornly yours,

Sure you can put a Wifi extender close to the Innuos and run a cable from the extender to the Innuos. You would have to attach the extender to your company network though. You can try connecting the extender to a WiFi Hotspot from your cell company and see if it works if connecting to your company network is not allowed. You can always get an inexpensive one from Amazon and if it doesn’t work send it back.

Thanks IanO for your inputs… I have been running Euphony OS and Stylus or Roon with StylusEP (Mac mini to M-Scaler and Dave) and have been researching server upgrades, but haven’t been able to demo Innuos OS vs Euphony. Your posts here and in system photos helped me decide, and I picked up a Zenith Mk3 a couple of days ago. Very easy to setup and the sound is excellent. I love the Roon interface, but the iPeng - Innuos OS experience is pretty good and the SQ is very nice. Just wanted to say thanks for your posts as your upgrades and inputs helped me decide.

Good choice (from a biased Zen Mk3 + Roon owner).

I searched Euphony and found this review of the dCS Bartok sourced from Euphony.

The reviewer is clearly an audio-techno-geek and includes a ā€œtopologyā€ of his main headphone system and speaker system.

The headphone system runs Euphony from a NUC to the dCS Bartok with an unbelievable number of gadgets, including 4 separate bespoke power supplies feeding the NUC and ancillaries, the power supplies in turn being fed from a PSA Regenerator. In the speaker system, he just plugs the Innuos into the wall, which is perfectly fine as it has a high quality mains filter.

The Innuos is a no-brainer if you need a usb output, as you do with the M-Scaler.

I got a Zenith Mk3 over the weekend. I was feeling a little wary of waiting for the Octave server, and this felt like it would provide good compatibility with the new Bartok (arriving sometime today).

It’s still burning in, but I have to say I am really impressed with the sonics compared to my old MacBook with Audirvana. Almost all of the things I thought were shortcomings with my DSS seem to actually be source related, and now it really sounds excellent, much more layered, controlled, precise and detailed. I actually found that my Matrix+I2S as well as my iFi USB decrapifiers all improved the sound further. While the Zenith on its own changed the character of the sound, the extra stuff deepened the blacks and soundstage.

It has become a lot more enjoyable to listen to music. Around the time I got into computer audio I started becoming really ADHD in my listening, skipping around different tracks etc. With this setup I feel pretty transfixed and usually end up finishing at least one song when I start it up. The seductive flow of music in the rhythm and dynamics is really present and makes me want to keep listening.

If I had got the Innuos first, honestly I probably wouldn’t have bothered with the Bartok. I can really appreciated the balanced detail and texture the DSS is capable of. Although, once it is here we will see how far the combo can go, and if the Innuos makes an improvement as an NAS.

I’m personally set for the moment, but if the Octave server with I2S can beat the sound of the Innuos, and especially the Innuos plus regenerators and Matrix, I would not want to be without one for the DSS. I’m sure it will pair even better, but in any case, to really appreciate the DSS DAC you need a great source like the Innuos, upcoming Octave server, or Directstream Memory Player.

Hope you enjoy it. I have not regretted the purchase nor had ā€œI wonder whatā€¦ā€ upgraditis since I bought it. I have got a PhoenixUSB in the chain and many reviews say that Zenith Mk 3 + Phoenix = 90% of the Statement if you use USB out. Austin Pop on audiophilestyle gave it a very good review as did The Ear. Worth a listen if you get the chance.

Question, do I have it correct that a Zenith MK3 with a 4TB SSD costs US $5k+ and a Phoenix reclocker costs US $3k+?
And the Statement with 4TB is over $15k?
(The same as five good power cables??!!)

Oh wait, one would need two good power cables for the Zenith plus the Phoenix pushing the price up another $6k. Sigh.

Well UK pricing is £3,999 for 4TB Zenith Mk.3 and £2,250 for the PhoenixUSB. 4TB Statement is £10,800.

I actually got a show discount on the Zenith at the Bristol Hi-Fi Show of 15% so believe I have 90% of the Statement’s sound for 52% of the cost and 75% of the rack space.

You do need an additional USB cable and power cable for the Phoenix if you are obsessive about such things as I’m sure most of the inhabitants of this forum are…
