J River/MAC Problem

Got my Directstream on Saturday and am hugely impressed so far. Running Mac Mini and JRiver MC19. However, a technical issue cropped up yesterday. After all working flawlessly for a few days, somehow now everything is getting stuck in 24 bit according to DAC screen, whether actual 24 bit, or 16/44 or DSD (which shows as 24/176 but no sound, whereas first 3 days showing as DSD64 (I followed instructions on site re bitstream settings)). First time it happened computer restart helped, but not this time. As an experiment I tried iTunes, and same thing, all stuck in 24 bit input. Thoughts? Thanks in advance and Merry Christmas!

A common source of this is having some volume control in either JRiver or the OS not at unity (100, or whatever).

Also if you are doing some kind of processing (filtering, volume leveling, channel mixdown, sample rate conversion.)

In the PC version of JRiver (and I assume the MAC version) is the Player menu Audio Path tool - it displays any processing that JRiver is doing.

I’ll have to let a MAC user mention the common ways the OS messes with the signal.

Thanks Ted. Audio path shows no change but I’ll check volume. Congrats on amazing product, been listening until 3AM every night, collection is all new. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

And to you :)

Huh

Huh, raising system volume to max in JRiver worked. Thanks Ted!

In iTunes, unless using BitPerfect, Amarra, Pure Music, or a similar program, the sample rate and bit depth will be whatever is set in Audio Midi Setup (in your Applications/Utilities folder). The Mac will up or downsample everything to those settings.
