JRiver Media Center (All things JRMC)

Have anyone tested CODING option in JMC 24 in DSD, Double DSD and Quad DSD? Wanted to hear professional comment. Thanks

Reviving an old thread.

I remain a fan of this software. In conjunction with JRemote, I use it exclusively to play all the digital music I own. I have a very specific set of genre criteria that I use. It is highly customizable and is solid on my network. I use Roon/Qobuz in a much more haphazard way. The programs are Yin and yang in my musical consumption world.

The real purpose of this post is to let other users, or potential users, know that the JRiver company has not abandoned the great remote app JRemote. The recent update fixes several bugs and more importantly shows that they remain dedicated to the platform.

Finally, the company does respond to input on their website. They might not get to it quickly, but they do respond when informed about issues. The owner, Jim, can be rough but overall, I’m happy to support them with my, in terms of this hobby, modest financial support every release cycle.

I’ve also been using JRiver for years and have been quite happy with the sound quality. I have also been using Gizmo in conjunction with it which is designed for Android devices and has the added attraction of being free.

Couldn’t live without its customizing options and the on the fly conversion of the collection when playing on holidays or in the car…and as you say it sounds good.

Hey thanks for mentioning the update to JRemote. I didn’t realize there was one. Count me as a JRiver fan, though I’m still on media center 27. My only wish is that the Jremote would create a way to scroll through - large collections - for example, the letter S or T in my system has many titles and I’d like to be able to scroll let’s say to the middle or end of the S artists listings.

I view this as bad for the hobby but I LOVE JRiver. Hope this works out but betting it won’t.

I guess its true…the only constant IS change.

Hoping for the best.

You do know those threads started on April 1?

yes

A, hopefully, modest vent about one of my favorite audio software combinations: JRiver/JRemote. Mostly a complaint about JRemote. A post like this one wouldn’t survive long on the JRiver site.

The company reluctantly applies resources to keep JRemote up to date. Currently, iOS26 breaks JRemote (not the first iOS update to break JRemote). I’m sure it’ll get fixed but who knows? No official statements acknowledging the issue or intent to repair (I know, it hasn’t been that long). Bug fixes, in general, are very rarely addressed.

I’m looking elsewhere but am vested in the system at this point. Jplay is okay and does work with JRiver. Given that, it’s expensive and operates under a different principle than JRemote. Each copy (phone, iPad) stands alone and doesn’t share data or play status…..also, can’t modify the JRiver data base (only the local iDevice database). This means you can’t add songs to an JRiver playlist, only a local device playlist (not even shareable between iPhone and iPad). Also, search filters have to be written separately for each device.

I’m uncertain about the future of JRiver in general. I hope the current employees buy the company from Jim….he announced his intention to sell some time ago. I could just cave and move to MinimServer….

I would pay Roon prices, or more, for a well maintained JRiver/JRemote…..

Thanks for the heads up. I am on Media Center 34. JRMC is my favorite rendering software in terms of sound quality. Roon’s interface is better, but I’d hate to not be able to use JRemote from my iPhone or iPad going forward.

I just posted information about JPlay on the JRiver site: deleted within a few minutes. Just trying to help those with a broken controller get by. Guess it doesn’t support the core JRiver mission.

I’ve been using Media Center since the Music Jukebox days. However, I primarily use Roon these days.

Ya, big roon user too!!

I like that I can control/view my music exactly how I want it using JRiver. Control the genres my way, make list based up Mosaic and Bear Family for example.

given the above, I use Roon 80% of the time. It’s possible that if I fully immerse in JPlay, that might reverse. JPlay integrates Roon and Tidal seamlessly.

I primarily use Media Center for managing my library, but use Roon for everything else. I just find it easier that way.

I am not familiar with JPlay, but I will check it out.

I’m a little behind on my reading … Sad to hear this issue with iOS26 is happening. Glad I held off updating both my devices from iOS18. I’m on JRiver MC31, didn’t seem like I needed to make the recent upgrades since they have been focusing on the video side of the interface. Now you got me thinking I should start looking for something to replace JRiver. I dread that, my brain can’t seem to handle new software like it used to … setting up a Synology NAS showed me that.

100% agree that there isn’t anything new on the audio side in JRiver. No reason to upgrade if just using it for audio. That’s all I use it for as well. Don’t care a bit about video using JRiver. I upgrade only to show support. The fee isn’t much and I want the company to do well.

If they cease to support the software going forward (speculation based on Jim publicly looking to sell, think he’s in his 70s), MinimServer is my likely direction. I’ve looked around pretty hard. Not crazy about how it looks but think I can make it work for me.

Software is what it is, always an effort. Holding out hope his employees buy it and keep up the effort!

edit: Bob, one of the JRiver programmers, recently acknowledged that he’s working on fixing JRemote. Good thing to know!
