LHY SW-6: Snake Oil or A Substantial Upgrade?

Hi there, I tried three or four different SFP’s Amazon ones Finisair 2 different ones - and then I got a tip from DChang 05 on here about the Optospan with the Optospan SM fiber cable it’s the best result I’ve had.

Did you try the Finisar 1318 and/or the 1475? If so, in what ways did the Optospan make things better?

Yes I tried both of those I think - the ones that Alvin at Vinshine recommended and another one I was recommended on here. I sent them all back after I was told about the Optospan. It gave me more detail across all frequencies - more musical and just relaxed sounding. I am listening in Immersive 9.4.6.

Exactly how I felt compared Optospan to Finisar1318.

It better be good. It arrives Thursday,

With your system, I hope so🤔

Can you tell the difference between the Optospan fiber and the one you had before (was it Corning?) and was there a clear difference?

I will be able to answer that after Thursday. My expectations are low. But under $300 what the heck.

Transceiver makes more difference than the cable in terms of SQ difference, but Optoscan transceivers and their cable together seemed to produce the best SQ as I remembered. But I could not tell you how much cables differ in sound since that was two years ago when I compared them.

I too don’t really have a good answer on that one - I changed out the SFP’s to Optospan and the FO between them at the same time - I haven’t wanted to touch it since - I also found that the SQ was the best I had tried - I am excited for you to try it - interested to hear about it…

I am thinking of getting another SW-6 to convert upstairs out of Orbi to run 100’ FO down to my music room into SW-10 - this would replace the 100’ Cat8 I am currently running down here - has anyone else done anything similar? Thanks…

In our experience at least with the sort of experimental work I did, it’s more how well the ends of the fibers are cut and prepped than the fiber itself (presuming the right fiber is being used). Tiny differences in the quality of the fiber tips made noticeable difference. SM fiber was much harder to trim and prep that MM. We had only one guy who could do it consistently perfectly time after time.

Agree, start with quality fiber and engage a trained and experienced the to make up the splices and terminations. Don’t ask how I know.

I’ve done so: router out to SW-6 with 1m ethernet, than 30m (100’) Corning SM FO to the SW-10. Then 1m FO to the RS130 streamer. The previously used ethernet cat8 cable remains in place and now serves the tv set only.

→ the upcoming Optospan upgrade (from Finisar) is intended for the SW-10/RS130 combo.

Great - that’s very similar to what I’m about to do thank you. I’m expecting the Optospan SFP’s and 100 feet of fiber tomorrow maybe do it over the weekend - did you notice any difference in SQ? Thanks…

Yes, you bet!
In short: quieter, clearer. More profound bass, sound stage and definition. I hope you experience the same!

Man - those are all the things we all hope for - and do this for right! Thanks for that and I will report back what I find…
