For whatever reason, 1200 watts is bothering you. It shouldn’t. Seriously.
I listen at under 1 watt of power going to the speakers. With 2 amps (monblocks), a preamp, music source, and 2 subwoofers, I use about 130 watts of electricity total when listening to music (according to my P12 regenerator).
My M1200 monoblocks sound WAY more dynamic than my 45 watt per channel tube amps, again, while listening below 1 watt.
The M1200’s sound more dynamic and sound really good at lower sound levels, and with much more “magic”.
Yeah. Thanks I know I need to not fret over it. I’ve lived in a world of engineered exacts for 31 years. Equipment and systems design to rigorous specifications. Nothing more or less than needed. Bounded limits.
I know I’ll never come within sight of the 1200s power capabilities. But you make a good point. And i am hearing what all are saying.
Plus it sounds (pun intended) that the described sonic characteristics of the 1200 is what I’m after.
Decision made.
Dchang should fate smile upon me I’ll be sure to try that BAT VK150. Sounds interesting.
Thanks to all.
I’ve tried a bunch of different amps, both tube and solid-state, and each one changes how my music sounds in its own way. Finding the right one without spending too much can be tricky, but it’s all about what you like to hear the most—whether that’s the warmth from tubes or the clear sound from solid-states. I’ve learned a lot from reading and talking to others who are into the same stuff. There’s this forum online where people share what they know about audio gear and music production. It helped me figure out what I was looking for in an amp and how to match it with my speakers to get the sound I wanted.
I hope you are satisfied with M1200. I still love my M1200, and never even thought about my BAT anymore! The best part is I am not sweating in California summer anymore (BAT mono blocks were oven).
My M1200s made my speakers sound harsh. I rolled the tubes for some Gold Lions, much better but not as good as my AM 833S’s which sound magnificent. I suspect it’s just my speakers not suiting the M1200.
I don’t know that they will drive any speaker, has anyone tried to drive an apogee scintilla with them?
That’s the type of power you need for a 78db speaker, but I doubt they will have the current.
I had a Mark Levinson No 534 amp in my system for a month. THAT amp was harsh with the FR20, but not the M1200’s. Putting the M1200’s back in the system was such a relief from the fatiguing Levinson for me, in my system.
When will PSA come up with a Class D amp in the PerfectWave line? All my other PSA components are in PerfectWave family. Not that I am complaining about the SQ of M1200, but it would be nice if PSA could make M1200 even better, and move the new Class D into the next level. I will be first one to jump in for a Beta!
Speaking of PerfectWave line, is PSA working on the next generation of preamp?
Jeff Rowland comes to mind as in stepping up in Class D sound. Apparently Atmasphere has some fine sounding Class D mono block amplifiers. I have yet to hear a pair.
There is a replacement for the BHK250 coming out but I know nothing about it. Seeing as BHK isn’t around to do the design it will be different. I do recall someone here saying there won’t be any tubes in it, but it was not “official” confirmation. Paul did try to build a Class D amp prior to the BHK 250 but he couldn’t get to a satisfactory product, that’s when Bascom was called in to save the day!
I’d assume it was designed by Darren who is now with Parasound.
I spied a Perfectwave Preamp on the bench in one of Paul’s last videos. I gave them a call they said late this year or early next, solid state. You can see it in the bottom right. Huge caps on that!
Excellent news!
Sorry to hear that. What speakers are you driving again? I’ll check your info page in the event it’s there. I probably need to update mine…
Harbeth 40.3 XD and M1200s…do it. Especially if you already have the Harbeth’s, which are much more expensive than M1200s. My M1200 on high output from an P12. Groovy.
Makes sense if they are updating the BHK 250 … Did you, by chance, ask about the use of tubes?
The rumour is no tubes.
I didn’t ask specifically on any update to the BHK 250, just the next version of the preamp - no tubes
