Beautiful speaker! I hope you made a new friend with GG. I bet he wants to hear the subs when you get them.
What beverage did you offer hIm?
Chas
Freshly fermented banana juice, of course! GG is interested in buying my Q3 speakers, he wants to come back and listen to some of his own CD. I won’t order the Magico sub until I sell Q3 first. Some sensibility needs to prevail.
I thought you would have bought two subs… I am surprised you are taking such a half-hearted approach
The S-subs don’t have a pass-through outlet which makes it problematic for daisy chaining a pair of subs to a single source. Normally you’d connect a pair to dual sub outputs on a HT pre-pro, but in my case I’ll be using a full range XLR output from my Halcro pre-amp. So the plan would be to daisy chain the S-sub with my SVS subwoofer which does have that capability. However I don’t know what affect this would have on the S-sub auto-EQ.
The Magico freaks in the US mostly use a pair of Q-subs with their M3. There is only one other M3 owner I’m aware of who is using a single S-sub.
I use more than one pair of speakers in my setup and I also use 4 x BHK amplifiers. Because the BHK preamp only has 1 x pair of XLR outputs I had to make up Y leads. I was going to suggest the same for your setup, but as I bang this out: - it came to me that I use Mogami whereas you use esoteric - exotica - so that wouldn’t be an option for you . Then again !!!
Running subs off a Y-adapter is not a good idea. I tried this using an Audioquest Y-adapter and the sound was rubbish. To do it properly you need one of these:
Ok… I see that. I made up another set of interconnects for my setup. But I see your predicament…!
I used to use a Mogami AES/EBU. I sold it and bought Shunyata Research Sigma AES/EBU. Completely opposite ends of the performance spectrum.
That’s a shame… But hey - don’t feel too bad about it - you can easily pick up another Mogami AES/EBU.
The pins have been pulled. The speakers have been on the pinned Mpods for a week whilst I get accustomed to the new arrangement. Positioning the speakers with 3 x Mpods on carpet isn’t as easy as with the 4 x M-feet. The M-feet get a much better mechanical grounding through carpet, and the speakers can be more accurately positioned. They just feel more solid. It is difficult doing the speaker geometric alignment by eye, due to the curved carbon sides and top plate. I thought it was about right, but in the end I decided to make a jig to square off against the two forward M-pods, and used a string line to adjust the toe-in against a reference point at the center of the rear wall. Using the jig reveals how far off the by-eye alignment was.
The speakers have far more toe-in now than all my previous speakers. They are intersecting about 3 feet behind the listening position. Now that the pins are pulled the speaker position can’t be adjusted any further. It now becomes a 2 person job, to tilt the speaker, fit the pins, and then make any adjustment, and then remove the pins for listening assessment.
I do prefer the look of the speaker on the Mpods compared to the M-feet. But I do have a big impression in my carpet now where the Mpods were before. All that weight has crushed the carpet and underlay. You don’t have that problem with the M-feet.
So the question is, do the Mpods sound better than the M-feet?
Yes. But M-feet are 90% of the way there. Certainly on carpet. I’m curious if Mpods are better served sitting on a hard floor surface than carpet.
Reminder that Magico S-series price rise of 10% happens next week. If you’re contemplating buying a new Magico S-series speaker time is running out to beat the price rise.
I’ve ordered a new Magico subwoofer. Delivery in about 3 - 4 weeks (my preferred color - pewter - is made to order). I’ve also ordered some Sunyata Research power products - I want to evaluate how their passive gear compares against my PS Audio power delivery system.
I like this color, but I wasn’t brave enough to choose it.

Why not, it’s not as though you have anyone except yourself to worry about do you? Though perhaps it might be hard to move on…
I think the colour is great.
To the contrary. Me is the last person I worry about. The kids come first.
Now McIntosh are getting in to the AC power business with the MPC500. Not for me however.
I want two of whatever that is.
Have you tried Synergistic Research’s power conditioner? I have their PowerCell 12 UEF SE.
No, I recently ordered a Shunyata (expected delivery May 22). I’ve been reasonably happy with my PS Audio power gear over the years, but Shunyata seems to have taken over as the hot-ticket item in Hi-end audio AC power. I’m not aware of any owner reports of PS vs Shunyata…one will be coming soon after May 22.
