Magico Magic (and unrelated matters)

Me too, but the price is mind boggling (from next week US$ 38,720 MSRP for a pair in gloss paint finish). I’ve heard they are quite difficult to EQ properly. I’ve read the installation manual and I’m in for an adventure. Mine will be the only Magico S-sub in this part of the world so nobody local to call-on with direct experience.

And S-sub is their entry level sub. The Q-subs are above that (Top dog Q-sub 18 = $72K/pair MSRP). Rumored that a more affordable A-sub is in development.

Seems the only disadvantage of Magico besides their little too low pricing is the lack of an own forum to praise their products :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Not many manufacturers have an own forum similar to PS Audio. Actually, I can’t think of any.

Polk Audio used too. Not sure if they do anymore.

I think you’re right with the forums…didn’t see any of another manufacturer either.

Triggered by this thread and my rather disappointing experience (in opposite to most rave reviews) with the Magicos at the last high end fair visit (see report with very short comments below) I started to read a bit more about them and why they are so expensive.

I got that the immense effort of the aluminum chassis has its price and that they also manufacture their own drivers, which certainly buries much more money than using suppliers. And especially the extremely rigid chassis has it’s positive effect. I also heard this at the show…they sounded extremely pure, transparent, neutral, revealing…just not emotionally involving to my ears in that setup (which is sold as a perfect match a lot in the press)

Not that I’m generally convinced about the opposite chassis strategy, but the most surprising and emotionally convincing experience of that show was a quite small speaker with intentionally resonating housings and a large external crossover design of something like 25 year developing time (not much smaller than the speaker).

Audio shows are no place to come to a meaningful opinion on speakers. The new Magico M2 speaker was debuted last week at the Montreal show and the pins on the Mpods hadn’t even been pulled out.

Absolutely correct. Sometimes it works out, sometimes not and it mostly varies among brands at each show.

What a shame! To think they travelled all that way with the grandiose expectation of selling dozens of sets of Magico speakers only to face the unexpected calamity at the end of the show when not a single pair was sold!

The Magico salespeople were dumbfounded by the seemingly endless ingress and egress of potential customers with cash literally spilling out of their pockets ready and willing to purchase - and not one of them did. Eventually, every last one of them begrudgingly scampered from the room, mumbling the exact same words, “I cannot believe how abominable sounding those unmagical Magico speakers sounded!”

Then, at 5:01pm on Sunday afternoon, an unexpected glimmer of light ascended from the base of one of the Magico speakers which caught the attention of the Magico salesman. Upon further examination, he witnessed the unimaginable! The pin was never removed from the M-Pod bases!! :open_mouth::weary::sob:

Shellshocked and ashamed, the Magico team exited the building via the freight elevator, avoiding the angry mob awaiting their appearance in the lobby, vowing never to show their faces in Montreal again.

So sad… Poor speakers were just misunderstood.

I’ve been on a CD buying frenzy lately (which I blame on my new Esoteric Grandioso P1). Spotify pitches stuff at me that it thinks I might like, and it gets a good hit rate. An album that grabbed my attention recently was Anjunadeep 08. So then the search for the CD begins. It’s not available in Australia; I need to order it from eBay sellers in the UK or the US or Germany or somewhere else that is not here. Then I found it on the Anjunadeep Music store, and the price is about the same, but buying it from the record label store they give you a download copy as a bonus. Cool. I bought the CD and downloaded it in WAV (about 3GB download).

I copied the download from my computer to a 2TB Maxtor HDD that is attached to a USB port on my Pakedge RK-1 router. I’ve got a pretty good A/V optimized network at home and it copied over in a flash. I’m not one for playing music in this way (i.e. computer audio) because it’s clunky to say the least. I prefer network audio playback from my Kaleidescape system because that is what it’s designed to do. It’s 100% totally slick and works flawlessly. It connects to my Esoteric N-01 streamer/DAC via coax.

As a totally mindless exercise I thought I’d compare how the WAV file sounded compared to Spotify streaming. I use the Esoteric Soundstream App on iPad to play from the local NAS, and it works well. Soundstream shows it playing at 1.4 Mbps. Flipping to the Spotify stream is dead easy, just flip a button on the App and I’m now streaming off the internet at 320 kbps.

I can’t believe what I’m hearing. Spotify sounds better. But how can a lossy stream at 320 kbps pulled off the net sound better than an uncompressed stream pulled off the NAS at 1.4 Mbps? It’s bizzare. I don’t understand it.

I’m just blown away by the sound of Spotify (I know, I’ve been saying that for a long time now). The NAS sounds good also, but Spotify is clearly better. The experiment tonight only confirms what I’ve been thinking for a long time now, these clunky computer audio + NAS setups and music management and playing software is rubbish. I read a lot in the forum here about all the issues some of you guys are having, with snap, crackle and popping noises and your PS DAC/Bridge 2 when streaming using Roon or Audiv-what-ever it’s called. Seriously, I don’t know why you persist with it…clunky operation and pops and crackle etc…my DSJ worked great as a Spotify Connect device. Why don’t you dump your NAS setups and just stream from the internet?

Spotify and NAS comes down the same cable to the DAC (which is connected to the router). All the hardware is identical. Only difference being one source is coming in off the internet as lossy, and the other is not doing either. Lossy is winning that race. Spinning the CD is the no-brainer overall winner, which is why I buy CD’s again.

I installed one of these on the door of my music room today, for access control. Shameless plug. It’s brilliant. I can now lock the door on the room, with secure access via finger print recognition. I also bought the WiFi Bridge which connects to the smart lock. I can unlock the door remotely if required, each entry is captured and logged, plus it does a heap of other cool stuff.

If you had stayed on course with the wonderful DMP you wouldn’t need to go through all that nonsense… ; )

I made the right choice. The Esoteric is infinitely better than the DMP.

I switched from a computer/NAS/Router/ethernet/DSjr setup to the Melco server/USB/Matrix2/DSjr setup.
