Magnepan 3.7i vs 20.7

A view of my old Maggie 20.7 set up. I had tube traps in the corners behind the speakers with the diffusion side towards the speakers. The two Rel Subs are sitting atop ASC sub traps.

Forgot to mention that I had the speakers about 7.5 feet from the front wall. I also had the tweeters on the outside because I found the bass was cleaner in my room that way. I preferred the wide soundstage. I encourage you to play around with positioning after they are broken in. Get painting tape out and mark different positions and angles.

Also a laser square is handy for helping see the angle of the direction of the tweeter relative to the listening position. A laser ruler also helps tell you distance easily.

Congrats on the 20.7’s. May they work well for you. I HAD a pair of 20.7’s for 7 years and just recently sold them. They are amazing speakers, but alas I am looking for another speaker to hopefully supersede them.

Omg!! I’m looking forward to your new thread in a couple years about your purchase of the 20.8s. Lol.

The MBL 120s were the speakers that superseded my 20.7s. I bought them used for $11k. A great value. The Omni pattern is like Maggie’s on steroids with bass as deep as the 20.7s. I also like the form factor better than having two big doors in my living area.

I’m looking for a speaker that can image/disappear like an LS50, dynamics and volume like a Klipsch Cornwall and soundstage like the Maggies with deeper impactful bass. Budget $25-40k Cdn retail.
AKA Unicorn speaker haha :upside_down_face:

I am biased to MBLs and omnidirectional wave forms. Have gone from the 120s to the 101s pictured here. The 116s and 111s may be in your price range if you can find them used. There was a pair of 116s for sale near Vancouver on Audiogon last fall for $20k Canadian. My 120s may be for sale although I think another audiophile in Minneapolis wants them.

My shorter reply is listen to some MBLs driven by good amplification. I think they will meet your parameters.

@RsZk You may want to consider the line of open-baffle speakers from Spatial Audio Lab in Salt Lake City, UT. Great reviews. Good prices.

Did you get some new electronics with dem 101s??

So let’s here about the 101s. You dog.

Yes. All MBL Noble Gear. N15 Monoblocks, N11 Preamp, and N31 CD Dac. Went from being a PS Audio guy to MBL. More to follow after more gear arrives.

I have a set of X5’s and they are pretty darned awesome.

I’ve seen these before along with Pure Audio Project speakers as well. Alas, I would definitely need to listen to these first along with really any speakers before plunking down money.

OMG I’m truly loving the sound of my system. I played the Shelly Manne/ Jack Marshall’s Sounds! LP and my goodness unreal! Want to hear what ARC, Magnepan and Kubala Sosna cables reveal please listen to the Sounds! album by Manne and Marshall.

Hi bruce-in-philly,

I dream of owning 20.7’s one day (I plan to add them to my house bond - hope my wife won’t divorce me though) but I have the same issue as you mentioned here. I now work from home after the office was permanently closed due to COVID. I own MG1C, 2,5R and 1.6QR, but as they have to go in the lounge, I don’t listen to any of them nearly enough. So, I came uo with a mad plan - I put the 1.6QR’s on my desk. Insane, I know. It was marvellous, but then I missed them in my lounge and moved them back after a month or so. I also build speaker. I landed up building a MTM open baffle that sounded ok, but not Maggie good. So, what to do? Answer, Magnepan MGMC1. So I started looking. Found an excellent used pair some months later. Now proudly on my desk, mated to a sub, I can’t be happier. BTW, the MGM1’s sound BETTER than the 1.6QR’s, except for bass of course.

I am the new owner of 20.7. Most happy, except about bass, especially & low bass. Total lack of stuff under 70Hz. I previously owned Magnepan 3.5 and the bottom spectrum was deeper and better controled than the 20.7. Is there a matter of burn-in ? How long will it need to get a deep and focused low range? Thanks much!
