Modding the DirectStream DAC MKI

You’re a good brother. Sorry to hear of his situation, glad you can help him make the best of it.

Which cable did you use before?

One of my PS Audio AC-12 power cables.

Ok, I thought you might have used the Farad Level 2 copper or silver.
I use the first and maybe will also check the silver in comparison.

For me the Farad is essential, the DS with the transformers alone a bit too slow and too rich.

Yeah. . . I swear my system is so fast outside the source that I like a little slow and rich. The My Audio Labs cable adds a little richness that helps. I didn’t have any Farad cables to try and I don’t want to wait for one or afford one right now. I’ve got a few idle cables.

The power cored to any LPS in a digital chain as well as the LPS fuse will change the sound. It is pretty remarkable. Sometimes the audiophile fuse is not better either nor the more expensive cord.

Oh yes–I’ve long known cabling really matters with any component.

And the last few years have shown me a lot about fuses.

Back to foil on cable Thead that was embedded in the DS mod somehow, but I guess this was where vmax started.

I wrapped the copper tape over the Culler Crossover2 PC directly and I did not go full Monty on the wrapping mainly because the cable looks better this way in my own mind.

There is a slight improvement in the smoothness, I think. But it was not obvious to me like the 3M 7050 tapes on P15 and PST. I did not hear any area that was worse for sure, and I think if there is an improvement, it would be an ease on the overall presentation. It may well be in my head too. I did have a nice glass of red wine while enjoying the best sound I have heard from the system lately.

I only did it on Cullen PC because my other cables came with expensive looking thick tubes, and I do not want to tape them over to cheapen the looks. So, there may be more improvements if I use another thin PC to try the wrapping in a later date.

But I think, again, there is some improvement…

To get it to work best. Foil shield must run full length in one continuous piece then bring shield all the way up connector and tape to male ground prong. This in turn is an antenna draining RF to your ground.

Colorful!

Anti Alien too!

The copper shields really open up the cables. More air, better inages, smooth and ultimate clarity. My draw dropped being able to see a sax player move his instrument :saxophone: bell left and right then walk center turn back to solo at the drummer then back to the audience.

You have no idea the noise was there until gone.

Alight, I’ll give it another try, and I hope I don’t hear more improvement. My wife already thinks I went overboard on this tweak for sure. Now I’m going to tell her I will make the cable looking golden bright.

The female connector end needs no coverage. Just up to the backshell. I did two layers Al foil then copper. Difference is better than a SR purple fuse change. Plus no break in period.

Slick silver swan. How long do you make the neck to collect 5G and wifi frequencies?

Can you do that as a rabbit—Al will pay big bucks for it.

Better get his hat size first or give it an adjustable band.
