Anyway, hate to see all of these dealers dropping off. The dealers need to satisfy a greater audience. Doubt that will happen, because of the passion of the purist, but needs too.
Look at the younger generation. They all live with headphones. I hate headphones, but if I was a dealer I would sell them. If they like a good headset, they will love a big rig later in life when they have the money.
Any recommendations for a reliable turntable dealer/repair shop in the Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN area? My 20+ year old Technics bit it today. The last time I got parts was in 2012 at the Needle Doctor. Do not reply Best Buy! Worked there done that… .
Small husband-and-wife shop. Vacuum tubes and great repair service. (He’s more a repair guy than a dealer, but sometimes he has some interesting used stuff for sale. I bought my first vintage Thorens from Tyler.)
@terzinator. Thanks for reminding me of these local folks. Once this pandemic is simmered down we can have a local meet up with @aangen in Minneapolis. He has some keen ears and has helped me with my setup. We also end up trading extra chords and gear within our systems. Happy to lend you out some extra power chords to try if you desire.
I have friends who share my love of music. Friends I jam with and go to music festivals with and perform on stage with. Friends I geek out on guitars and mandolins with.
But I’m the only one who’s nerdy enough to futz with my stereo stuff on a constant basis and troll audio forums.
Hey guys - I realize that this is an old thread, but a good friend of mine in Minnesota had been going to the Needle Doctor for anything turntable/cartridge related his whole life. However, he is now looking to replace the stylus on his Shure V15 type IV cartridge, and is struggling to find another source, either locally in MN or online. I told him that I would ask here to see if anyone can possibly help, thanks!
Might take a week or so but definitely the place to go
(link is for the upgraded SAS stylus, but if you search, there are others that might be less pricey… I have a type IV on my thorens TD-121 and I went SAS and never looked back)
Agree that’s really the only option unless you get extremely lucky on Ebay and find a still unused Pfanstiehl stylus from the 70-80’s as they were repackaged OEM’s sold in record and musical instrument stores. When I worked for Record Bar in college we had the whole display case of styli at the register.
Jerry Raskin’s Needle Doctor used to be in a neighborhood of the university of minnesota called dinkytown, and I always wanted to work there. I didn’t have any money for a new turntable or fancy replacement stylus, so working there was my only option. It was such a cool shop.
The Podium Guitar Shop was down the block, and I wanted to work there, too.
But I didn’t, and got some stupid campus job delivering mail to the epidemiologists.
Here’s a perhaps crazy suggestion: get in contact with Peter Ledermann at Soundsmith. Years before he marketed his own Soundsmith brand cartridges he built his reputation on rebuild of production cartridges from other manufacturers. No idea whether he has rebuilt a Shure V15 type IV, but it is well worth at least getting in touch with him. Often his rebuilds are better than the original.
