New PMG 512 streamer firmware

I noticed and installed streamer firmware 2.4.388621 today.

I don’t know what it addresses though.

That version came out a couple of weeks ago, around the time the 512 was certified “Roon Ready”. I still wish there was some way PS Audio would announce the availability of these new releases, like via an icon on the display the way my AVR does, and with release notes available online.

I hope our Boulder based team has that on their 2026 ‘best wishes’ list!

Even a regular posting in the DAC forum section at a sort of ‘@all’ announcement posting would get those of us on the boards via email notifications that a new firmware update has dropped. I appreciate that main firmware can’t be downloaded or updated like the streamer firmware - but as you say a check firmware update alert from the main menu would be great

On other streamers, users are notified a new version is available for download/install. Can’t that be implemented here as well?
I’m not going as far as to request an automatic update option, as is customary in commercial software applications. Although, that shouldn’t be to hard?

I’d think it wouldn’t be difficult at all. Right now, when you fat-finger the Streamer FW rectangle the DAC connects to some service at PS Audio to retrieve the version of the latest firmware, compares it to what you have, and let’s you know if there’s a newer version.

If, say, once a day the DAC fired off the same code on its own, it could inform you of new firmware by displaying an indicator rather than a dialog box. If/when you install the new firmware successfully, the installation process would clear the indicator.

It would be nice if touching the indicator would take you directly to the “New firmware is available” dialog instead of requiring you to go through the Gear>System>Streamer FW procedure.

Perhaps an email to registered users of the unit as another method. This could include a description of the changes/improvements.

That is the way we do it my business - IT infrastructure software. Folks register on the support portal to receive an email when new software, patches are dropped along with the release notes

Yup, that works, too. Here we have a chance to do both!

Actually, the email method would work for both DAC and streamer updates, whereas the indicator would only work for streamer software.

In truth, there’s not really any way to discover updates are available for any gear without trawling the PS Audio main site and forum, something I’d guess not every owner does. It seems to me that emailing availability and release note information to registered owners for any PS Audio gear would be a great service to all owners of equipment containing firmware—more and more a fact of life, going forward.

Saw same and downloaded about 30 minutes ago. Powered down and cycled the streamer a few times. Took Roon a few minutes to catch-up + a ROCK reboot. Dropped connection but now stable for 3+ songs. FLAC and DSD64 play with no issues.

…no release notes on the Firmware Download page. Downloads – PS Audio

Funny, I checked less than an hour ago… Just did the update and only had to select the dac as output device again in Roon. Playing nicely now.
I have to say I’m also curious as to what improvements have been implemented.

New DAC firmware (2.9.3), too.

Good news for me. All was working well until I installed 2.8.2. Like a few reported I was also unable to find Roon with 2.8.2. Tried all the usual fixes but no luck. Just updated to 2.9.3 and 3.0.09 for the streamer and Roon now works like a charm. Thanks! Now back to the music.

I’m an old time audiophile and would like to try using the Streamer in my PMG 512. I mostly play SACDs extracting the DSD layer with a modified OPPO and playing them through the PMG 512. It sounds fantastic. I updated the firmware to 2.8.2 a couple of days ago. Now I see there a 2.9 version that I’ll update tomorrow. In the meantime I wonder if you folks who know more about Streaming can help me. I setup the streamer on my wifi network and tried using Spotify from my iPhone. I found how I can select the PMG 512 but couldn’t get it to play. Then I tried a button on Spotify labeled Airplay and Bluetooth. From there I was able to select the PMG 512 and bingo I got music. I selected the highest res 24/44 lossless and wow it sounds great! A buddy told me I should be able to select the PMG 512 Streamer directly via Spotify. He said I probably needed to login to Spotify from the Streamer but I don’t see a way to do that. Any thoughts? Thanks…

Hi Jim, if through airplay the streamer is working. It would also mean the input on the dac is set to streamer (can you please confirm?). That’s good.

In that case, I wonder why the (non-airplay) dac won’t show up in Spotify, for you to select. It does with me and it plays music.

Strangely, Spotify over airplay isn’t visible as a choice on my phone, although it’s an active option in Roon…
Rebooting my phone didn’t resolve this, so I can’t be of further help to you.

BTW

  1. Spotify does high quality only with me, not lossless. I wonder if further FW upgrades should fix this, or something else is off in my settings.
  2. I have a premium account. Lossless is working when playing through my phone/headphones.

The PMG 512 does show up on Spotify and allows me to select it but it just hangs and no music plays. If I instead pick my iPhone with it set on Spotify to Airplay + Bluetooth it buffers for a few seconds and starts to play. I just updated the firmware to 2.9.3 as well and same problem. Also just tried throttling down the play quality to just high and same result. Plays through Airplay but not selecting the PMG 512 directly. I also went to my laptop and tried from there. I see the PMG 512 and select it. But then I get a message that it cannot play the file and suggests I try loading it from a local file or some message like that.

Strange behaviour!
Thinking back on previous issues/updates, others have recommended one or more power cycles.
No guarantees here, but have you tried?
