PMG 512 streamer won't initialize

This morning my streamer dot was green, but wasn’t discoverable by either JPlay or Qobuz. I tried the new 3.0.6 DAC firmware streamer resync trick—turn off with logo button, long press on logo button until relay click and display shows streamer initializing.

Streamer now shows gray dot for several minutes and streamer menu shows Initializing.

Power-cycle streamer via Audio>Input power>Streamer. Gray dot for a few minutes. Initializing.

Power-cycle DAC from rear switch. Same scenario.

Factory reset. Same.

Though I don’t imagine this will work, downgrade DAC firmware from 3.0.6 to 3.0.3. No joy.

Reinstall 3.0.6. Power off DAC, unplug for ten minutes, re-plug, power on. Though patience is said to be a virtue, it doesn’t help.

I’d like to reinstall the streamer firmware, but there’s no mechanism to do that. Plus, the streamer has to be alive to use the network, so it doesn’t matter.

Has anyone else experienced this? I’ll try to reach Delia tomorrow (Monday). Until then, I remain an unhappy camper.

I did the update and PMG streamer worked fine, and I don’t hear any SQ difference.

But I am afraid to try the logo button based on your experience. Hopefully Delia can help you tomorrow.

Does anyone know if there’s a secret way to boot the streamer to an initial software configuration from an on-board ROM? That would be handy. Then I could configure the network and update to 3.0.12. I suppose that’s too much to hope for, though.

Sigh. I really can’t blame you. Something wiped out my streamer software, or the module simply went belly-up. Neither speaks well of the 512, unfortunately. Like Jack tells Ennis, “I wish I knew how to quit you”. I really can’t, though, despite its looooong teething pains.

I can play one album with Qobuz then streamer disappears.

Mine is working fine now

I wish mine was, too. It’s going back to Boulder for surgery.

— Chris

Im afraid to do mine now. I do not use the streamer any more so might just skip

Mine works perfect with 3.0.3 so if there is no sound quality difference I’m staying with 3.0.3. If it’s not broke don’t fix it. To be honest the Onix transport sounds so good I have been spinning disks more than streaming these days.

After I installed 3.0.6 the 512 streamer would not be recognized after playing 1 album. Next day I unplugged it for a few seconds. Working great past 3 days

I spent some time troubleshooting with the help of Peter Grinalds of Grinalds Solutions, the folks who produced the software for the 512’s streamer. Wi-Fi was disconnected due to me having hopefully tried a factory reset, and a hard Ethernet connection showed no link. Given that, there wasn’t any way for PS Audio (or Peter) to remotely poke around, if that had even been possible, so my only remaining option was to ship the DAC back to Boulder for resuscitation.

Unfortunately, I no longer had the original shipping box as I’d used it to return my DSD Mk1 trade-in, so PS Audio is shipping me a new one. UPS originally reported delivery today (Saturday), but now they’ve claimed a one-day delay, so it’ll get here on Monday. The ship to Boulder, repair/replace streamer, ship back to me time will be really tight, given that PS Audio plans to shut down from 6/27/26 through the week of the 4th. My music sources are all digital and require a DAC, so maybe I won’t be listening through my rig again until the middle of the following week. Add to that the fact that I shipped my amps to Atma-Sphere on 4/20/26 for upgrading and they had them in hand on 4/22/26, but much to my surprise and chagrin I didn’t get them back until 6/6/26. I’ve had a week to listen since 4/20/26. Sigh.

I’m not actually despondent, though, because this Wednesday, 6/24/26, marks the last(!) of twenty-eight days of radiation treatment for prostate cancer. If you’ve gone through that, you’ll know that the required low-FODMAP diet means there’s a lot of good food you can’t eat—no dairy, no gluten, no alcohol, no fiber, nothing fermentable. The whole process translates into fifty-four days of this crappy diet plus daily MiraLAX. The cherry on top is that our son and our granddaughter will be visiting from Boston during the July 4th week. We’ll all celebrate my wife’s Independence Day birthday, and I’ll eat and drink whatever I want.

Congrats on completing the radiation treatments. I also remember getting a little fatigued during that stuff.

Wonderful to hear you completed the regime. Well done

The radiation and all that goes with it sounds like a chore. Glad you are at the end of all that. I had a radical prostatectomy when I was 39 (20 years ago), it sure got rid of the cancer but left some longer term limitations - but we do what we have to so we can continue to be there for our family!

Prostatectomies are apparently only indicated for younger men, like say then 39-year-old you, because of the increased dangers of surgery in older patients, like 71-year-old me. There’s no avoiding some damage to healthy bladder and rectal tissue with radiation, but complaining about that would be lame, given that you’ll already have been coping with your post-operative issues for 32 years by the time you’re my age.

Meanwhile, there’s music to soothe our souls! And thank you, @ganache and @Elk, for your kind words.

— Chris

Congrats on completing the mission. Outstanding! Hard salute to you sir!
Now enjoy your Father’s Day and chow down!

Thanks, Jim! Sadly, I won’t be able to chow down until Wednesday at lunch time, but Melanie and I have already planned an outing to the local barbecue joint. Baked beans and coleslaw on the side!

I had radical prostatectomy at 62 yr old in 2024, and happy to say all good with results. In pretty good health otherwise thankfully so consensus was go for the surgery.

It certainly seems as though you made a great decision! I’m in pretty good health for someone nearing, though not quite having reached, codgerhood, and the oncologist included radical prostatectomy as an option, but after discussing and considering the three options (well, four if doing nothing is added to the list), I felt radiation was probably the best choice for me. I guess I’ll see by five years hence.

Men problems, huh?
