I hope PSA is having someone learn as much of Tedās expertise as possible, otherwise, when Ted is no longer with them, will anyone be able to successfully succeed him?
Yes, I wonder that too. I suspect the answer is No
We all lead a pretty fragile existence but that is no reason to shy away from great things. These electronic widgets will always be as good as they are even if the originators move on.
But, will succeeding products be as good?
Darren would be a great choice, imho, if he didnāt already have so much on his plate.
Ted does not work for PSA. He works with them. I seriously doubt anyone currently at PSA could āreplaceā Tedā¦
Although he is not a PSA employee, he is with them as an independent consultant/contractor. And, although not a PSA employee, he most definitely works for PSA, again as an independent.
Iām wondering why you think that?
Iām quite happy with Windom but finally as a human being Iām very curious and open for new impressions.
Despite that I wonder why Paul has alteady announced 2 dates of release and missed both of them. The actual silence about the upcoming update and Paulās exciting announcement of the step forward of sound quality with Sunlight some weeks ago makes me a bit confused.
Circling back (bc it was requested to list those that do) to dacs with FPGAs implementing the d/a conversion with possibility for field updates, add Teac new UD701n to the list. Trickle down SOTA Esoteric technology (Teac parent company of Esoteric), Dual mono, 4 separate toroidal transformers, DSD512, fully balanced, full MQA, Roon, LUMIN O/S (excellent), built-in streamer, Tidal connect, analog and digital inputs, under $5k probably around $4k TBD
Edit: perhaps closer to $5k. Pricing still TBD I think
Nothing to be confused about (and really no silence) at THIS pointā¦
Paul and others from PS Audio have recently posted that they found some bugs in the programming that impacted certain functions/caused some glitches but, reportedly, do not impact the sound of the firmware update they were shooting for.
Purely speculation on my part, but I am guessing that the bugs are proving to be a bit of a challenge in terms of being able to resolve them AND not impact the ānew soundā of the DAC.
FWIW.
In Post 979 Paul stated the problem is āOnce you install Sunlight, the DS will go into mute the first time you switch inputs to the Bridgeā¦Thatās not a big deal but, itās a deal.ā.
As the release date gets more protracted I keep wishing for an interim release of the version that was originally planned. Would that be a big deal? It would to me.
It would be a problem for there to be multiple versions of the same firmware floating around and it would create all sorts of support headaches.
The problem symptoms were worse on the Jr. After it was fixed on the Jr, we (I) had less confidence that the problem on the DS Sr was only ā⦠the DS will go into mute the first time you switch inputs to the Bridge.ā The problem is worse than that but it can be ameliorated by the PIC doing commands to the FPGA in certain orders. Perhaps we were indeed only unlucky in one place on the Sr and multiple places on the Jr, but I wouldnāt count on it.
So far things are fine with the latest release candidate. I have no idea what other things need to happen inside PS Audio before the actual release.
PSA needs one Sunlight to rule them all. The more diluted the PSA staff gets, the longer itās going to take to get to the MKII.
Thanks, Ted

Someday Ted your going to miss all this drama with firmware updates. Thanks again for your perseverance.
