I am curious if any of you have tried out the Storm series from Audioquest…I have been hearing favorable reports, especially on the Hurricane. I am hoping to do an in home comparison between Shunyatas Alpha NR and this when I can arrange it…
I haven’t tried the AQ.
I have heard that the hurricane is very good. I would like to try but feel that I have gone too far down the Shunyata trail
Yeah…that’s the whole thing. One cable will probably lead to upgrades for the whole system. In the end I am just going to have to do a comparo and figure it out. The good experiences above and solid reputation of Shunyata make them worth auditioning.
I am looking forward to your review, with more than a pinch of anxiety!
I have to say that the pure marketing feel of the Audioquest product mix, technology descriptions and general feel of their website leaves me less than a fan.
For cables, Shunyata and Iconoclast give me a sense of technology that I can hang some expectations on.
Now able to report what cable upgrades on the P20 resulted in. The
improvement ranked near to the DACSR cable change, which now
has a Shunyata Alpha NR. Tried both the Alpha and Sigma ER and NR
versions on the P20 and the Sigma NR was the easy winner. I was
hoping RonP and cardi were wrong, theorizing that regenerated
signal would clean up the junk but I was unfortunately wrong.
So, thanks guys, for the opening my eyes, and my wallet .
Yeah - I think of the P20 as an amazing 60Hz super amp with 5mohms output impedance, no way is it a line filter. It creates 2000 VA power with the input power presented. Those SR power cords are amazing; however, need to distract my wife when making a multiple cord purchase.
Remarkable improvement. the Sigma NR, from the clarity of the top end to the weight and quality of the bass. I would say that it makes almost as big an improvement as the P20 itself, which I just am not prepared to go without.
BTW, Whilst eating breakfast this morning, I was reading an older Stereophile that they had in their reading rack (it’s called Village Coffee) and a reviewer stated that he considered an Audioquest power cable—some “Dragon” thing, to be a reasonable bargain at $5K. Luckily, I was finished with my Number Three omelet or I might have chocked.
Yes indeed!
Bumping up this older thread. I just ran across this older set of power cord reviews from Audio Bacon. I was a little surprised about his thoughts on the Sigma NR.
It’s a matter of personal taste and system synergy. He also prefers the Kimber Palladium 10 which I also own and the Sigma is far better in my opinion/system.
@RonP, do tell. In what ways do you find the Kimber not as good?
It’s thinner sounding with a pronounced reduction in the weight of the sound. Piano sounds smaller, for ex.
I’ve been shocked at what a difference the Sigma NR makes with my DSD Sr. No other cable I’ve tried, incl the Alpha NR and Kimber, have this effect. It makes no sense to me, but it does work.
Well there went $3600. Two Deltas about to go offline.
I always recommend trying first from The Cable Co lending library.
I guess I’ll never know. I’m in Alpha NR territory. I’d be curious to know what other power cables beyond the Alpha and Kimber you may have tried over time. Your system has many things in common with mine - I look at is as a benchmark in a way.
At the suggestion of The Cable Co, I tried a couple expensive Synergistic cables. I can’t remember the names but they had a plethora of nonsensical acronyms attached, like UEF and MIC, KEY, MOU, SE. I sent them back because I heard no improvement over stock cables.
I ordered them from the Cable Company, Thankful for the current 20% discount. I have been wrestling with the decision for weeks now. I bought a Sigma for my P20 and an Alpha for my DSD. Both currently have Deltas. This is insane, I know. But I believe quite strogly I will hear and appreciate the difference. (damn it!)
