Since you are apparently using a view camera, do you follow Ansel Adam’s “zone system” to squeeze all of that dynamic contrast out of your media?
Yes, studying the control of film exposure & development with the Zone system was something I learned at the beginning of my interest in photography. I’ve found new life in old negatives since high quality large format film scanners have been available. Scanning pyro developed film negatives and editing them in the digital domain is the best of both worlds IMO. No matter how much masking, burning, and dodging you do, wet darkroom printmaking is rather crude in comparison to the infinite tweaking and editing you can do with digital printmaking. I do find contact prints made with the old Kodak Azo paper or platinum/palladium contact prints to have a beauty that can’t be remotely duplicated with a digital printer.
Several years ago I sold off all my film cameras and now work with either a medium format Phase One back on a Cambo view camera or a Canon EOS 5Ds-r and Zeiss single focal length lenses. It still amazes me that the small and portable (in comparison to a view camera) Canon can take files that are the resolution equal of a 4x5 film camera.
Digital has come a long way. I love the Zeiss prime lenses.
