Photography

A few select images from last night’s display.

And a few more.

Wow! Great photos
 Border terrier?

Thanks. Bernese Mountain Dog and Moyen Poodle cross.

@brett66 those are great photos. Care to share any equipment, exposure info if you have it and don’t mind helping other budding photographers?

Added a couple of my favorites from recent efforts:

You nailed both of your images! Well done. Though a little observational feedback, The Milky Way shot could use a bit of a white balance tweak
it’s quite green.

I stopped bothering with EXIF data years ago. Using mostly FujiFilm bodies for the past decade or more what you see thru the viewfinder or screen is what you get. I simply expose for what I want to capture
astro and fireworks will become seat of the pants the more you do it but it looks like you’re already there with exposure. Of course the camera can’t ‘see’ these to decide how to expose.

The sooner you become comfortable controlling everything manually the better you’ll be able to express what you want vs what the camera wants but I think starting in aperture priority mode is probably the best for anything nature or natural related. Shutter priority for high-speed captures

Don’t be afraid to push the ISO on modern sensors and the best camera is the one you have with you! I only use an iPhone these days. I’m done with heavy lenses.

The Orion Nebula was captured using a little portable apochromatic triplet. Seestar S50. Fun device that dispenses with hundreds of pounds of gear I used to drag around the desert southwest in the 90s to capture astro objects.

Hope this helps stimulate thought and doesn’t come across as too critical

Thanks for the thorough response. I just recently realized why changing ISO was affecting my white balance/color temp with milky way photos. I got some great advice from YT channel: https://www.youtube.com/@simon_dentremont

He turned me on to using manual mode with auto-ISO and many more good ideas.

I’m still addicted to gear and don’t mind carrying lots of stuff. I’m also lucky to have some good opportunities right in my yard!

Also agree with the idea that “the best camera is the one you have with you”.

One more photo (Moraine Lake in AB, Canada):

A favorite part of the world. Lake Louise from a recent trip last Fall.

Excellent advice

Nicely put. I would add aperture priority for portraits as well.

OBX, Albemarle Sound from Nags Head looking west toward Roanoke Island.

be careful of those incoming seas Hurricane Erin is pushing your way!

I was there last week. Normally this is the week we would be there but we celebrated our 25th anniversary last week and she wanted to go to the beach to do so. We lucked out.

oh that’s good - I imagine there are some bad rip tides there right now, not a great way to celebrate. Happy Anniversary!

A few select Milky Way images from last night. Conditions were ideal and practice practice practice does lead to some improvements.

Are you shooting in RAW format?
