Problem with developing a new item, say DAC, is that the customers/end users have so many different combinations of other components in their systems that no “new item” is ever going to be 100% fully free of “glitches”.
However, many of these “glitches” such as the screen problems for example, one would have thought that they ought to have been cured prior to units being sold.
While this seems obvious and of course what we would all hope for, that would be true only if those problems were evident in testing. Obviously, we would find and fix any problems in any system, as complex and complicated as the PMG DAC or as simple as a power amplifier. If they were apparent.
In our beta testing and prototype testing these screen problems rarely appeared and, when they did, often hard to track down because they are often so difficult to repeat. It is not until you begin to get hundreds of units into the field that the sporadic problems surface on a more regular basis—and we are able to get our hands on an actual unit consistently displaying the problem. Then, it’s easier to fix.
The screen issues a few are having have been identified and are being addressed this month, hopefully this week. Thanks for the help.
Thanks, Rob. While I don’t think it’s the same as what we saw in my video, which was all I was trying to say, it can be a serious problem as you correctly point out. I haven’t yet seen one that bad. Yikes. Most of the screen problems I have seen were the lower half ones requiring a reboot. In any case, now that they are out we have enough examples at the office to replicate the problem on a regular basis (something we didn’t have before), and are testing the fix to make sure it’s solid, this week.
So it sounds like these screen issues are not software issues, but rather hardware related. If they were software related every unit would behave the same, right?
new to my PMG DAC as of ytday…. so my issues are now plus 1 - factory reset sorted this new one out but still losing sample rate if ever i use Optical and get the endless spin sometimes when switching inputs - pretty sure a software update will fix this
NOTE: the DAC sounds great with Innuos Zen Mk3 or even my Sony BD player SACD input. i do not use a pre
I’m curious how he PMG DAC sounds direct compared to with the BHK pre. Does the BHK pre still elivate the sound like it did with previous DACs, or does the PMG sound better direct?
