The user manual for the P12 says that outlets set to always all will receive regulated regenerated power as long as long as the rear switch is on. I’ve got my amp and my DAC plugged into always on outlets. I put them into standby when not in use. So what does pressing the off button on the P12 remote do? Does that just turn off the display in this case?

Exactly. It turns off the display and if you have any zones set to switched, it will completely shut those off as well.

I wondered that also since I have my P15’s outlets always on, w.o.w I don’t need to turn it on to use my stereo.
Another thing: putting the powerplant into standby also turns off the 12v trigger. My use case was to leave the outlets on “always on” and use the trigger to switch my tube gear on and off. So I could control everything via network and let my tube heating up before listening.
It also turns off the IR receiver.
