PS Audio AirLens

It is amazing that for a 20 page manual all you get is this.

It would be obvious to state that MConnect is the native app of the audio processor. At least you’d think so.

The spec sheet seems to come mostly from the ConversDigital UK site. Curiously the actual audio processor board retails for £52, about $70.

As much as I love my PS Audio gear, producing high-quality manuals has never been a strong point. Perhaps it’s because Paul doesn’t like to read manuals. The section you cite is not helpful to users and is not a surprise.

It isn’t really a manual at all. It’s a marketing brochure. I read manuals before I try a product because I want to know how it works. I hate to say (again) that the PS Audio manuals really put me off both Mk2 DAC and AirLens because they start with pages of stuff about how wonderful the product is and better than anything else. Plus the formatting is incredibly amateurish and difficult to read.

My son did this manual

This the manual for my DAC

They are very similar - very clear graphics, limited text and mostly bullet points, no B/S

My system has a product brochure, one of the best I’ve seen. Beautiful to look at, mostly images, but everything needed to sell the product and full specifications at the end.

The brochure from Chord, the nearest equivalent to PS Audio in the UK, is also a work of art.

Doing this stuff costs quite a bit of money, and it seems to be largely neglected. On the other hand, I do like most of their advertising (except the ones of people listening to hifi that isn’t plugged in), except I’ve stopped buying audio magazines.

Yes, I think psa “dropped the ball” not allowing for external psu use.

It can be moded to use a LPS. Looks like the smps lifts out. I’ve only seen 1 picture on the inside, but it looks like you can solder two wires to the board, run them to a DC barrel jack, then hook up your lps to that.

Sounds doable.
Who’s the first brave one (and better be a photographer too )?

@Paul would the be an option ? Just asking <3

I’d have to look but modifying a product is always an option. I can tell you that we experimented quite a lot between linear and SMPS and at the EOD found that there was nearly no difference. That said, any time you connect up a HUGE power supply (of any kind) it’s always going to sound better. That’s the nature of power supplies. Obviously we could add a bigger supply inside the small chassis, so an external one would work…but that’s true for every one of our products. As a manufacturer where do we draw the line? And how much engineering energy do we expend to make an external jack available considering all the protection that needs to be added? As a customer, you’d expect that even if you plugged in the wrong supply it won’t blow up the unit…

It’s never an easy choice.

Thank you, can you tell me how many volt DC you performed your test with an external power supply ? 12V DC or 15V DC or Other
I know a local professional electrician who is specialized in Audio Amps (he even designs his now amps and preamps) who might be able to mod t the Airlens in a safe way.

I use Sbooster Linear PSU’s And I’m planning to use Farad PSY on this one.

It should say on the board inside. You would need to match the voltage to what the smps in the air lense puts out. FYI It will void your warrenty. Please let us know how it sounds if you do it.

Failing that the tech (or any one who opens it and is competent with a meter etc.) could measure it.

*** DISCLAIMER *** DO NOT do this (anyone) unless:

  • you really really know what you are doing
  • happy to void guarantee and/or damage the device
  • are genuinely unhappy with the current sound quality of the device
  • won’t blame anyone but yourself if you are injured or worse

n.b. Other purveyors of bad advice are available

I wasn’t advising it. Just letting them know it could be done. If they really must have a lps on it. It can be done rather easily IF you know what you’re doing. Whether or not you should do it is a whole other story.

Indeed, some folks just gotta tweak though, and I can understand that too

If anyone else was unsure:
Mconnect just updates the streamer module, not the AirLens. For the latter, the other update method has to be used (dip 7 down and WPS pressed 15 seconds).

I just saw Paul’s video on using WiFi instead of cable ethernet input to the AL
Did anyone here compare the 2 options ?
On one hand WiFi eliminates ground and analog signal phase errors, but I wonder if the WiFi EMI/RFI does not degrade SQ. Also is there a difference between 2.5Ghz and 5Ghz WiFi ?

Do you have a link to the video?

I listened to AirLens over WI-FI. This connection is inferior to the LAN. The difference between 2.4 and 5 is noticeable even when the tablet is connected to the network.

Thx @yuriy
is the difference between 2.4 and 5 only in response time, or also in SQ ?

Thanks. I use my AL as a format converter and noise reducer. I connect the Ethernet output of my NAS to it and then use the AL’s I2S output to connect to my Mk2 DAC. The only thing I WiFi for is to let my tablet control the NAS.
