PS Audio AirLens

Yea it’s a lot to forgive that the competition seems to be doing at lower price points. I am hoping it’s a set it and forget it type experience but I am curious about what other streamers are offering. The Eversolo and Neo Stream both have screens and web based UIs. I hear the screen could interfere with SQ but I wonder if I would hear a difference in direct comparison.

My current streamer is a pro-ject stream box s2 ultra which I have connected via a Matrix XSPDIF to get I2S output. It has no screen but a decent Web UI for wifi and firmware etc. Works very well.

I’m happy with the decision sound wise and regarding fit to my purpose (although I still struggle with part of the compatibility aside of Roon). What I think PSA underrates is, that in several terms aside of sound quality for the buck, one isn’t necessarily the more convinced, the more one knows about non priorities of PSA.

How do I make it more secure? Or is this inherent in the design?

Shouldn’t be a problem…if you turn off WPS at your router after you connected the AirLens, you should be fine enough.

thanks jazznut

I read somewhere that there is a way without WPS by placing WiFi ID and PW in a file somewhere…it’s just a bit complicated…but possible. I guess support can support this.

It was a good number and with the trade for my Bridge II I made the jump. As it is currently in production, I have a little time before it arrives so I am using this to brush up on I2s cables as it is not supplied with one like my PS Memory Player.

Will be running with a DSDI and was planning on feeding with the I2s connection. Can I use a good HDMI cable or is the pin locations different and have to locate a reasonable I2s cable… A little confusing to say the least…

Steve, Your note is a little confusing. I assume you are going to connect your new AirLens to a PS Audio DS DAC Mk1 with an HDMI cable going from the AL I2S output to the Mk1 I2S input.

If the above is correct you can use any HDMI you like. My advice is but the AL on top of the Mk1 and use a very short cable to connect them ( 0.5 meters or less ) and buy the best cable you can reasonably afford.

Tony,

Sorry for the confusion on my email, but you managed to answer the main question as to the cable.

As far as cable length, in order to try and keep it around .5m it might require the memory player to be moved. Would there be much of a downside to increasing the cable length on the player? It is currently rarely used once music has been ripped to music server (NAS).

Everyone’s layout is different. Use whatever cable length you need to make it work. :slightly_smiling_face:

Most HDMI cables will work fine, but there are a few exceptions. AudioQuest makes some cables with the label eARC. These are prioritized for video use; while they will play music over an I2S connection, they don’t sound as good as the regular versions at the same level. Supposedly they have less silver and more copper in the audio lines, or something like that. (I just purchased a Firebird 48, not a Firebird eARC.)

And then there are cables specifically designed for audio I2S connections. I own a Tubulus Concentus I2S cable, which was recommended by some folks on this forum. I like the idea that I wasn’t paying for wires I would never use; it does not have the connectors that are used for video in a regular HDMI cable. It’s a very good cable. However the the design does not include a wire for pin 19, which PS audio uses to determine the signal coming in. So the music plays just fine, but the red light for “no connection“ stays lit on the DS DAC.

So a bit of research is in order.

I have just had confirmation today from the company that their V2 of the Concentus HDMI cable has been modified to overcome the red light issue. They have also said they can modify the connector shape to clear the PS Audio DAC and AirLens protruding screws provided this is requested at the time of ordering.

I use Wireworld cables for all of my digital cable needs. For HDMI cables their flat design is excellent for eliminating cross talk. They really improve the sound.

Good news. Is it available now?

Yes, it is available. I ordered one today. 3 week lead time quoted.

Is the V2 designation new for this redesign? I thought it already was at V2.

The V2 is the current design introduced to overcome the red light issue @magister mentioned further up the thread.

Thanks for letting us know about this. After I got my Tubulus Concentus, I contacted the company about the red light issue. They said that they were aware of it and were working on a fix that would be available in “some months.“ It’s to nice to know that they’ve taken care of the problem and can also address the screw issue with PSA products (although the latter is a very easy fix to do oneself).
