PS Audio AirLens

Helping a neighbour set up a Rose RS520 took up a couple weekends for me, as he kept finding new weird functionality glitches during the weeks. At least all the problems were well documented in their forum. For many of the issues, there was no solution but to reset whatever feature each time using it. Just might be a little too complicated for its own good. For example, he has to manage Tidal playlists in the Tidal app. But to see the cover art on that big Rose screen, he has to play with the Rose app.

We tend to make our world more and more complex. Especially with the introduction of software functionality into audio devices. There are so many small(er) companies, each developing their own solutions. It’s almost inevitable that we all will be running into issues (not starting a lead on the promises of AI ).

Software development requires a lot of resources, so, it’s only logical for manufacturers to push solving these issues into the future, then having new customers to pay for this. That approach only goes if the basic functionality is (more than) ok and there’s a reasonable assumption that the (software) issues are solvable within a reasonable time span. The latter is where we as inpatient consumers have a different opinion on what is reasonable. And for that period leaving us in the blind to learn if the issues are indeed solvable.

What I saw, they seem to have a moderated support forum where company representatives promptly react on problems and clarify things for the forum public. That’s what’s needed imo. In contrast to this: bugs and no support or reaction = clearly worse.

I agree that a dedicated manufacture support forum is the best.

Please stop postulating what PS Audio should have done or not done. Ted had nothing to do with the Bridge in the original DS (he never even tested one) nor anything to do with not incorporating a similar function in the Mk II. I’m sure he agrees with the consensus that an internal bridge device injects noise, but to add an internal device is a PS Audio decision, not a Ted decision. And to repeat for the umpteenth time, Ted is not a PS Audio employee. Ted, as a third party, developed the FPGA “engine” that PS Audio uses. His work stops there. The casework, the power supply, and the GUI were developed by PS Audio.

As for pricing of the AirLens, why do you care? You weren’t going to buy one, you have an Innuous, correct? PS Audio made the decision on how to assemble global components into a final product. The retail price of that product is the end result of their standard pricing model. Don’t like the result? Move on …

Well I think I know what you mean here but comment seems a lil out of place on an audio forum, haha

almost funny reading a comment about what Ted should be Forced to do…

I have zero recollection of that discussion, but if you can find it please post a link. A forum member saying Ted was involved does not count.

Hi all,

I’m sure this is posted somewhere but on my Directstream Jr the bridge was able to control the volume on the dac. I now have the Directstream Mk2 and am wondering if I get the Airlens is the Airlens is able to control the Mk2 volume setting or are they completely standalone from each other? To be clear I don’t want the airlens to control volume digitally, I want to know if the airlens interfaces with the Mk2 to allow volume control.
Thanks
Jon

Merry Christmas!!

I also noticed this with the Mk I, so it’s an Airlens topic, no Mk II topic. I try to clarify this (and another topic) with support by phone and mail since I think 2 month, but no chance so far to get any info on the matter (but otherwise nice contact).

Not sure what you mean by Airlens control the volume. What software? I know roon could control volume with bridge but the MKII is not a roon endpoint. Not sure how the other software worked. You have to use the MKII remote.

Sorry, I should have specified when using Spotify Connect. With the directstream junior if I turned the volume down on my phone it would control the directstream Jr volume (without having to use the remote). I currently have the red feeding the Mk2 and when I turn down the volume it’s done on the digital side and not the Mk2. I would prefer not to have the remote in one hand and my phone controlling songs in the other to maintain the superior volume control.

I am not sure if this belongs here or over in the review thread. I am also not sure if this has already been discussed. II just noticed that there is an AirLens firmware upgrade on the PS Audio website. The Firmware Upgrade Guide included in the zip file is 5 or 6 pages long! Has anyone done the upgrade? How hard is it to do?

Check out the

AirLens v2.6.2

thread.

Good luck!

That’s not new is it ?

it’s been available about 4 weeks…but it seems few have tried it, and unsure what 2.6.2 actually does…

Thank you so much. I feel really dumb not being able to find this on my own.

Do not feel dumb! No one remembers everything and the search function is not the best.

Welcome @Mikeelo! You should find some of the answers you seek in this thread and another one that is just Airlens Reviews. I don’t personally have one or I’d jump in and tell you but I get the sense that folks really like it.
