My new Euphony server does not communicate with Bridge 2 well, even though it supports UPNP too. So, I am not sure if Airlens is still in the picture. The server on its own sounds great as an end point. I will still try it to find out if the combo works, and if there is an SQ improvement. But I am not in a great hurry anymore.
I still like my idea of a Wi-Fi enabled remote with base functions. Play pause vol up and down. Maybe even some sort of display on it for what’s playing. Super easy to do. Add to zone and done. If it’s RAAT enabled it does not matter on your set up at all. Who cares what manufacturer u have or how fancy. In the end roon remote is roon remote. It could run android. They basically have it already with the new 7” RasberryPi touch screen. Anyone from roon listening?
I’d buy it! With one caveat: the handset itself should not be a Wi-Fi device, or even Bluetooth. Simple, dirt cheap IR works perfectly, or there are a variety of RF options. My current handset is a Logitech Harmony (now discontinued) which uses RF to signal my button presses to its base unit. The base unit then translates those into IR blasts or Bluetooth button presses or network commands depending on what you’ve set up. Annoyingly the Roon integration that exists for the Harmony doesn’t work to control a zone that’s based on a SqueezeBox
But yeah. Give me something like a Harmony remote with a base unit that has a screen and is connected to my network so it can communicate with Roon, but also send IR for volume control on my pre-amp…
The issue with that is everyone has something different. Play and pause next and prev are controlled by roon remote which is network based. Vol could be learning.
Along with the remote interface there’s also the phone interface. Here’s an example, it’s in two screenshots since the screen scrolls.
Volume, channel up/down, Pre source selection, HT control (including Audio formats), system power on/off, zone control including source and volume, curtain controls, screen up/down…
How does that remote control roon next prev etc?
It looks nice and all… and probably does what I’m asking… but it feels like a marriage proposal when all I want is somebody to play an occasional round of golf with.
Seriously I’ve already got one of these and other than it not having Roon integration directly it does everything I want a universal remote to do. Logitech Harmony Companion - Universal Remote Control & App
Oh it is marriage. But it’s like a second marriage when you know better
Currently for Nucleus there’s an extension that controls Roon. But very soon from what I understand (don’t ask me how I know ) the extension will run on most if not all types of Core.
It was a sad day when they discontinued that remote. It really surprised me. It was the number one rated DIY remote in every publication. It must have made them little or no profit.
I have an Elite stashed away in a drawer.
That is odd. I never had any trouble with my Euphony server and Bridge 2. My normal setup was USB to Matrix to I2S though.
The Grimm MU1 originally came with a super easy way to program any remote, any keys you choose to control Roon. Skip forward, back, play, pause were just a button press away. But after the last upgrade they now have a web based control system, point a web browser to the IP address of the MU1 and you can control every function. With the invention of tabs in a browser I always have it at the ready.
In other MU1 news a new purchaser who has a digital library of over 100,000 albums found the Roon system in the MU1 wasn’t up to task. Crash crash crash. He worked hard with Grimm and they were stumped. They had never encountered that problem before. (I have never had any issues, but I only have 8134 albums, 96,000 songs, one is a really good one though!)
They asked him if he had another server around with a large processor. He had a big NUC and he runs Roon on it and uses the MU1 as an endpoint now. There is no downside and other users are trying it now as well. They all agree the MU1 still works its magic. And the NUC in the MU1 isn’t doing much of anything and things seem to sound better to those that are trying it.
I have a Pink Faun server collecting dust. I’m going to fire it up and see what there is to this concept. If it does sound better, the Pink Faun is much easier for me to manage the library as any and all drives connected inside or outside are read write controllable over the local network. Not so with the MU1. External drives are read only so when it’s time to add music to an external drive you have to use sneaker net technology. I.e. you have to remove the drive and walk it over to some other machine. Bah. They do this to protect us. Bah twice.
It would be awesome to not have to sell the Pink Faun. Mine has the top of the line USB board with two very expensive clocks on it. I could connect it up to my Ethos DAC to send my ever growing collection of DSD256 music directly. Just for kicks. The I2S output is an upgrade as well but I don’t have any I2S on my main system these days. It does have both Ethernet and fiber networking. Could be interesting. Fiber to one side of my EtherREGEN, Ethernet with an appropriate cable from the other side of the EtherREGEN to the MU1.
And another thing. A month or two ago I bought another DSD Jr. with the intent of giving it to my brother with the Jay’s Audio transport. My DSD Jr. has an issue with its Bridge. It doesn’t connect with the network no matter what. But the new Jr. says oh hell yes and works great. But it came with a scratched top plate. Not bad but the top on mine is perfect. So when I was switching top plates the top on mine came off as if the glue they used to attach it to the metal plate had vanished. When I flipped the cover over I see it is perfect both top and bottom. So for any of you who have a scratched top plate, try gently prying it from the supporting plate and flip that baby over. Rubber cement should be fine to lock it down again,
I love love love the DSD Jr. I wouldn’t trade one for two May Placebo DACs. Wink.
The way the Euphony Summus2 connecting to Bridge2 is using an USB adapter from USB-c of server to Bridge2’s Ethernet port. This is how they connect between their own server and endpoint, and I wonder if this link is the problem. They also are working on a new version of Stylus OS, and it may solve the crash issue too. I guess I will find out when the new OS actually comes out. It has been delayed a few times already.
The top of Perfectwave series do get scratches easily, eventually I may have to flip them over too. Thanks for the tips.
Great tip, thank you! I have top plate scratched of both the DS DAC and the PST.
When I’m going to sell them now I know I can flip their top plates, if I understand well. Just not for now because I’m pretty sure to scratch them again next time I put my clumsy arms above them to manage cables or what else on the back of the rack (I’m lazy and definitely a disaster to pay enough attention).
I gently clean the system with a “swiffer” cloth (don’t know if the brand exists with the same name outside Italy) from dust every two days, above and under the chassis. My wife is very impressed! And I’m able to find the way to do something wrong! Be aware: do not buy second hand units from this inattentive guy!
While not necessarily the most aesthetically pleasing approach, I keep the soft-cloth “pillow cases” the DS and DMP were wrapped in draped over the top of the components. This keeps off the dust and helps to prevent scratches. I just shake out the pillow cases now and again to get the dust off of them.
For example (old arrangement - before I acquired a DMP):
Nice looking setup. I use a soft brush duster called “the Audio Duster” that I bought years ago to dust off the tops. This duster is a life saver and I hope they are still available.
Thanks.
Interesting times, just announced. I have yet to hear an Innuos Pulse Series Streamer.
@weedeewop Innuos says the new Pulse will allow the Sense app to be used with other streamers on the network. With a dedicated ‘streamer out’ output on the Zen and Zenith now, can you use Sense app with an attached streamer now? Will come in handy with AirLens
