Redcloud for DS is live

Cover Art Problems usually need a Directstream restart…at least I don’t know another procedure in my case.

Come and get it! Go to downloads and download Redcloud for DirectStream. Remember to unzip the file and remove the files out of the folder and onto a clean SD card. If you need instructions, go here.

Have fun and let us know!

Redcloud for DSJ later today.

What a major improvement in every way. Clearer, cleaner, some distortion that I always though I heard is gone. Brilliant, thanks!

Bravo!! Ted! Dynamics and low level details much improved over Huron. My windows just got much clearer and opened with fresh air. I don’t post much anywhere, just a reader but I wanted to Thank You and Happy Holidays to everyone.

Before Redcloud there was a sound that drove me nuts. I tried to get rid of it by looking for anything that wasn’t correct that I could fix that might cause that sound. When I first coded up Redcloud I had great hopes and indeed it did fix the most annoying thing to me about the DS over the years.

As I’ve mentioned before, from the beginning as I’ve made things more technically perfect the better the sound. So I follow my head and check it with scopes, etc. I’m always looking to do the thing that will make the most measureable difference (even if I can’t measure it in practice.) Along the way Paul and many of you have made suggestions that I took as a hint for a place to look for something wrong.

What was that sound that drove you nuts?

When using a pre-amp , what is the best volume for the DS ?

In general you get the best S/N with 100.

Depends on the pre-amp.

The DS output doesn’t drop bits etc when changing volume so it can be used over a wide range.

If using the BHK Pre I set my DS to 100 and use the pre’s volume. I could reverse that and it wouldn’t matter as the BHK Pre volume control is also extremely linear.

However, if I was using another pre-amp with a non-linear volume control I’d experiment with different settings and choose the one I like best.

Ted, didn’t you suggest 80 recently ?

It depends on whether the S/N is more important to you than small amounts of THD on large signals. Personally I’d choose 100. People should experiment for themselves, but 100 is a great place to start. Also I expect that that 80 thing will go away in a couple of releases.

Probably a dumb question but–is that 100, and not 106?

Or am I the only one with a max volume of 106?

If you are using a preamp somewhere around 100 is definitely better than 106. If you don’t have a preamp you need to get things loud enough to sound good and that’s more important than the extra THD from going to 11.

So going to 106 can improve S/N over 100, but it adds more THD (sometimes a lot of THD with loud signals)

Going to 100 over 80 gives more S/N and a slight increase in THD.

Got it–thanks.

Been five days now and RedCloud sounds wonderful. This DAC keeps getting better, and if it never gets any better than this it’s still the best sound I’ve had in my home. My thanks to all!

How can I contact tech support? Have tried a hunderd times by now, it doesn’t load Recloud, or any of the previous iterations, and remains just stuck in Huron.

Hello Efe Te,

Thanks for reaching out to us about this and sorry to hear you are having this trouble.

If you would please reach out to us at service@psaudio.com we can get your address and ship you a pre-loaded USB memory or SD Card stick to update your DSJ / DSD DAC.

Thanks

Hi Jeremy,

Went smoothly and works a treat now -the force load did the trick. Many thanks man, PS Audio’s support structure is second to none!!!

Testing it right now but almost from the start you notice improvement in mid-bass, noise levels, general “musicality” etc. My speakers are Italian beauties, sound great but have the tendency to give you slightly recessed mids. Redcloud seems a perfect fit for them and I couldn’t be happier.

When I first got the DSJ and then had issues, jeremy jumped right in late on a Friday and got me up and running. Great customer support PSA.!

Hi, I can replicate the issue. It only happens on DSD tracks but only on those that have a high recording level. All other DSD and PCM tracks are unaffected. As it seems Redcloud has a higher gain than the other OS versions for DSD tracks. You can resolve the issue by lowering the DS volume level to something like 93. At least that worked for me. I have also forwarded to PSAudio Support and they will look into it.
