I’m very excited about these new speakers and we’re just putting the finishing touches on things. They’re a much better form factor for a lot of rooms and I think that we’ll surprise some people with the bass extension (in particular) and overall performance.
Unfortunately, we are not set up for custom finishes at all and we need to order rather large (by high end audio standards) production lots of speakers so there hasn’t been discussion of adding additional colors at this time, while I agree that your suggested color combination would look great.
I doubt you’d want an automotive paint shop to custom finish your sable black speaker cabinet, but that is an option too, I suppose.
Thanks Chris! Can’t wait to hear more about the FR20. With respect to paint color, I would not want to have a third party repaint the speakers, that’s a recipe for trouble …
I know a fellow who is just starting to wrap some vintage speakers. He’s still experimenting and hasn’t shared any pics. But he did say it looks promising. I’m not sure I’d do a new pair of speakers, but to each their own.
I think it’s just a 30 day money back if not satisfied. If you are paying $30k for a set of speakers a couple $ more for the perfect color would be worth it if that was your desire. I would think that a custom color would reduce the resale value FWIW.
There are a lot of custom paints that don’t need an oven cure. They use chemical hardeners in the mix for the cure. And most (or all) of the base coat /clear coat combos are water based.
Only water base paint needs to be backed at 90 degrees for 60 minutes should be fine with 60 percent relative Humidity .
Polyurethane based automotive paints do not require baking. I speak from 40 years plus of experience.
Any qualified automotive refinisher should be able to do a fantastic job, also with caution to temperature of baking. you can vary the temperature of the spray booth so you will not damage the item you painted.
Congrats to @Chris_Brunhaver, @paul and PS Audio on the Golden Ear award for the FR30 in the latest (September) Absolute Sound! From no less a reviewer than Tony Cordesman (the review itself is said to be forthcoming). He bought the review sample.
