Smitten With The Magnepan LRS

Turn em up. Push the bass. Leave em on…for at least a week. I have had many iterations of Maggies and currently use 1.7s. The Mylar membrane need to settle in.

I remember my 3.7is sounding a lot more forward and brittle initially. They smoothed out considerably over the first couple months.

Congratulations, the LRS has to be the greatest value in HiFi. You’re wise to order the MagnaRisers now as the wait time for those is similar to the LRS. I ordered my stands in November and am still awaiting their arrival.

And yes, the LRS do benefit from break in.

Yeah, Robert said it would be 12 weeks or so.

I’m at 14 weeks and counting for the stands. He got swamped after the Absolute Sound endorsement last August.

Found this interesting. At the 22 minute mark Nelson Pass discusses his pair of LRS’s with Steve Guttenberg…

First post here. I’m one week into breaking in a pair of LRS’s and I’m floored by their potential. I bought them on a bit of a lark to see what the commotion was all about. Now, I can’t stop listening to them. If you already own the amplification to drive them, they are a steal.

Welcome!

They are indeed a great buy.

A friend who is new to audio is looking for new speakers. As someone who is just starting to dip his toe into this hobby, he is interested in the LRS speakers for their affordability and rave reviews. He currently has a Peachtree 220SE that I donated to him when I upgraded my amp, and I’m wondering whether this would pair nicely with them. Please hold the comments about their 60 day trial – I know that we can simply try them – but I’m hoping someone might have some insights before I put my friend and the kind people at Magnepan through the trouble of shipping them back and forth. Many thanks in advance!

I’m 6 weeks or so into my long wait for my LRS speakers and MagRisers. Plenty of time to break in the M700s and Stellar Gaincell

I spoke to magnepan a week or so ago and was told they were working through the orders for November and I should expect to see my credit card charged and get a “your item has been shipped” email any day now. Hoping to see mine in a week or two.

Found a reviewer who ran 1.6’s with the Nova 220SE and mentioned that it didn’t seem to be a problem.

Lucky you~

I ordered mine on 14 Nov I think, give or take a day, so I don’t feel that lucky but I am eager to see how they sound.

You do have a point there. Patience has—usually—been one of my virtues.

From my absurdly extensive research of all things LRS, I gather that PeachTree in general is a good, but not great match for the LRS. “Good” is still good in the finicky LRS world. Perspective is important, as there’s a difference between experienced/ spoiled audiophiles and someone just getting started. One man’s “good” could be another’s “great”.

I found this video informative…

The Magna Riser MK7 Multi Risers are here and installed. This particular model requires a very very short Philips screwdriver (not included). I had to use a drill bit and a pair of pliers to get the screws tight. Not sure I’ll ever get them back off though! Came extremely well and thoughtfully packaged. This guy has taken 3rd party speaker stand making to extraordinary heights. He spends 4 hours “tuning” each individual pair. I have zero idea what that actually means as I struggle to imagine what one could spend 4 hours tweaking, not for an entire line, but for each individual pair of stands. Wow. But I like that Magna Riser does it, whatever “it” is.

What a great purchase. I’d say there’s easily a 30% improvement in sound quality. Such statements contain no objective, quantifiable facts, it’s simply my impression. Sound is more open, full, and dynamic. Soundstage is larger for sure. The LRS clearly prefer to be off the floor, floating in space.

Only complaint is looks. Not so much the stands, as they look fine. The LRS just look mediocre in a living room. I totally get why Magnepan has a long history of wife banishment to the basement. Yet the value ratio is off the charts. I might get a pair of Wharfdale Lintons with stands at some point and rotate between them and the LRS, just to have something pretty to look at. I do think the LRS look a bit better with the stock stands and the 6 degree tilt.

Highly recommend MagnaRisers. Absolutely worth the long wait. Given the time they put into each individual pair, can’t imagine they are making money as it’s a business model that defies the capacity to scale.

What color did you get for the LRS?
