With the time and effort invested, I later decided that I could not hear a difference with the experiment. The risers and elevated cables also played havoc with the robot vac! My Iconoclast speaker cables are now back on the floor tight against the base boards. All is great. Good luck with your quest for better sound.
The “Tall Boy” I bought appears to have a wide base (one of the reasons I bought them). Of course, I have not received them yet so I have no idea about their stability (looks like they have some weight too). These are not the cheapest, but I paid like $103 for eight including shipping. It is much cheaper than the one I bought from AliExpress (before tariff it was selling like $65 each?).
I ordered the Gold color because I prefer lighter color. I wish they look okay on the floor but they are hidden behind the racks anyway.
The Tall Boys I ordered was shipped and will be here by Monday. Now that was fast because I only ordered a set of eight three days ago, and they were shipped from East Coast.
Do I believe they will make a difference in sound? No, not anymore. Years ago when I had an entire different system, and had much lower level of cables, I did hear sound improvement when elevated the cables, but cable separation was more important I remember. Since then I have developed a habit to always lift and separate cables as much as possible.
But with my current system, I do not think I have heard any sound difference when they are on the floor, or a few touching each other. Could it be the better components and cables isolated EMI/RFI better, or could it be my ears are getting older to tell a difference? I do not know, maybe both. However, I kept doing it and do not feel comfortable to see any cable touching the ground, or each other.
I hope they will make the cable arrangement look neater (they are already better than a lot of cable arrangements from pictures I have seen recently ).
I wanted to try a set of risers and found some on Etsy that are 3D printed. I ordered them, and I don’t know if it’s the power of suggestion or what, but they seemed to open things up a bit.
I received Long Island Record C “Tall Boy” late afternoon. I put them into work, and I may make more adjustment in the morning. So far I like these a lot, and they look good on the floor. Here is one picture:
I was a sceptic as to the benefits of using cable risers, so I collected a bunch of dunny rolls (toilet paper rolls in Aussie speak!), then made a suitable cable cutout on the one end standing up. I was impressed with the subtle SQ improvement and left them carrying my AP Silver Apex’s until a mate told me off I eventually succumbed to some nicer looking 3D printed cable risers which sounded no better than my custom dunny rolls… but beneficially didn’t trigger anyone!
Keeping in mind that typical floors are not fero magnetic, I am beyond amused by the discussion on cable risers and especially the claims by Audionet that their para magnetic Gauss risers are worth the über-premium price of U.S. $1,330 (€1,250)! Audionet’s claims are based on subjective reviews. Claims that their “paramagnetic” devices are equivalent to “air which has a permeability of ~1.00000037 μr” may be true, but wood has a similarly to air or vacuum, which also have μᵣ ≈ 1.0000000. Which should you invest in—$1,330 for Gauss or < $31 wooden risers? Or, even less expensive upcycled “dunny rolls”
Some folks take this lifting cables very seriously…
