I got the upgrade itch after recently getting some new large electrostats from Prodigio Audio (video about it below)
Having no crossover in the speaker, and incredible sonic purity, I began to wonder what the PMG preamp sounded like vs. my all tube balanced preamp.
The 60 day trial period pushed it over the top for me, as well as PS being closed this week, so I made sure to get my order in last week so it could arrive tomorrow.
I’m wondering what ever happened to the large rotary volume control I thought I saw.
Also I’m now debating if I should actually put it in the system, or run a signal through the preamp in my video edit suite system’s RME DAC to do a couple of day break in?

The rotary remote looks interesting, but I am not sure how does it operate. The remote came with PMG SACD does not have numbers for selecting tracks, and If the new remote can do it in an innovative way then I will be getting one.
I suggest to break in PMG pre for a couple of days first. I do not have PMG pre, but on my PMG DAC the SQ was a little too “sharp” at the beginning, and it took weeks for it to smooth out the rough edges in my system. But two days should give you 90% of what it can do.
My preamp arrived with the box in perfect condition but the PMG is not powering on. When I engage the rear switch, I hear the relay turn on, but the power switch on the front doesn’t light up or do anything.
UPDATE- I replaced the top fuse with no luck, however removing the top fuse allowed the unit to power on and play music . Odd.
I have to say just cold out of the box the PMG sounds impressive in the bass, being deeper and more articulate than my tube pre. I’m excited to hear what this sounds like when it’s warmed up and with some break in.
The top fuse is for 230v countries and the bottom is for 100v/120v countries. I would expect only one should be used depending on what voltage is supplied. Maybe this is checked when powered on and if not correct the pre will not fully start up.

Yes as with all my PS gear, I tried the front standby button. But removing the top fuse allowed the unit to turn on.
I’ve listened to the PMG for a couple of hours now on some very revealing electostats that actually do bass and dynamics. While far from broken in/warmed up, what I’m hearing from the PMG compared with a well respected two box all tube balanced preamp is outstanding! The bass definition and added texture is excellent.
I feel like it took my PMG two or more weeks to fully flesh out, the bass kept getting deeper and fuller, separation and decays improved. I am at 2 months and my system never sounded better
It’s been only 4 days so far and have managed to keep the preamp playing for most of that time between listening and break in with the amps off, so I have probably 85 hours on the pre amp.
I’m really impressed with the Sonics so far in every aspect. Much better than my previous preamp and also compared with running the MKII/APS xFormers direct to the BHK300. It’s actually shocking how much a great preamp brings to the table vs. direct.
With the PMG pre, the entire room feels energized by these dipole ‘stats, and disappear much better than before. But also the tone of each instrument is so extremely good, and incredible to hear how solid state has progressed.
I’ll have more thoughts as they further break in and I play with speaker positioning.
