I’m a pure DMP-disc transport person. However, I’ve been giving the DSD senior Mk 1 with Bridge II a go as my wife mainly uses Tidal for most listening. We use IPads and IPhones as mobile devices. Presently I use mConnect player HD and Tidal.
I’ve been searching easy accessible information about what’s capable doing via the Bridge II without success.
Now I’m looking for bridge II user’s experience.
Q1:
Is it possible to stream sound from video services to the bridge II? (Netflix, Prime, Disney, YouTube and others). If so, how and what unpn program must be installed on my iPad?
Q2:
If it is not possible to stream video sound to the DirectStream via Bridge II, is there a way to stream other streaming services that only sends audio, like radio stations and apps that provides audio books?
Q3:
MConnect only shows Tidal, Qobuz and “local files on my network”. Is it possible to “add” more services or do I need another program if the network do not “make the service show up in the mConnect app? (Of cause the app must be made avalible on the local network, that I have understood)
So, even vague answers might help me in the eighth direction.
I’m very happy with the DMP as source and there are smart-tvs and computers avalible, but easy sound via Bridge II is better that fitting more gear into different digital inputs
Regardless of whether you use Youtube, Prime, Netflix and so on the easiest way to stream sound from a television is via an optical cable between the TV and the Directstream.
Thanks! I knew that of cause. I built my first home theatre in the 80s using LD-players and Nicam VHS.
I’m just trying to separate as much as possible not to interfer via power, RFI or others. All cables are up in the air and the less cables and gear connected to the stereo the better the sound. I would never dream of having a TV in the same room as the stereo hindering acoustics. So using an iPad for pictures is a “convince” on rare occasions.
Just having a Bridge II fitted and an Ethernet cable connected is almost a crime at this place.
I’m having a disc transport for a reason…
That said, I’m experimenting with getting the video sound to the DirectStream via its bridge II.
That’s why I haven’t investigated the Bridge II and unpn until now
Getting the video sound via Bridge II is not possible (no airplay functionality), but mConnect Control (unlike mConnect Player) will offer Deezer & vTuner internet radio.
Thanks again. But there are other unpn “bridge apps” than mConnect. I guess there must be one programmer out there that wanted to redirect sound and video differenty…???
One caveat in trying to use that configuration if you are also wanting video is latency. You will likely find the audio is lagging the picture and while surround processors have this adjustment, most TVs cannot delay the picture.
That’s true. However, if an app used on an iPad is the movie source (like Netflix app or similar) the sound via the same network would be fast enough to get proper “sync”. It would work like Airplay when separating picture and sound, meaning no delay.
This is not a life and death thing, but it would seem very odd if no control/redirecting app could provide sound to the unpn Bridge II while maintaining picture on the iPad.
I guess most programmers do not appreciate quality enough and keep with things like chrome casting and usage of Smart TVs.
Q: Any more ideas on this topic? This forum is filled with clever people…
Well…
With a Raspberry Pi, a (completely free) copy of Logitech Media Server (LMS - nothing to do with Logitech and hasn’t been for a few years, but for now retains the name, it’s actually the old Slimserver for squeezeboxes), and a couple of the LMS plugins (uPnP related), it ought to be possible.
I don’t have a DS DAC, but have played around with uPnP plugins and airplay plugins on LMS.
However, as mentioned above - sync is an issue, with the video staying on the iPad and the sound going to the DAC via uPnP.
For Audio, LMS also has plugins for multiple online sources such as Qobuz, Tidal, BBC Sounds, Bandcamp streaming and several others.
it is a lot of faffing and arm-waving to get it set up though unless you do that kind of thing for fun anyway.
Or…
AN old Apple TV Gen 2 bought for buttons on eBay, can be airplayed to, and has both HDMI and Optical TOSLINK outs (later models dropped the TOSLINK - why??!!!) 720p video size limit though. The Gen 3 has 1080p, but I don’t think it has the optical TOSLINK out.
