Four & More, Classic Miles, and Tony’s drumming special and powerful as always.
The performance is experimental to be sure. I first came across Sabu Touyozumi with a release he did in the mid-70s geared towards the Art Ensemble of Chicago, entitled Message to Chicago, a reference to Message to Our Folks. Recently a friend picked up a copy of this at Dusty Grooves, had me over for a listen and I was gobsmacked. My copy is now on the RP8 for a listen. he dynamics are incredible, BTW.
Decided you shouldn’t have all the fun and I’m listening to this SACD as well.
It never fails to amaze me how beautiful a sound Wilen gets with any of the horns he plays.
Hopefully this one does not go overboard with the Hyper Magnum “sound”.
It’s a little bit compressed but overall maintains the RVG sound well.
I’m working my way through my haul. I’m working through the Japanese pressings. This is really enjoyable. A little less structured and melodic at times but good, nevertheless. The PST makes it difficult to tell deference between good CD and SACD.
I ordered a 60’s stereo original, let’s see how it turns out.
I listened to mine today…it’s really exceptional sounding. A rare case of a holographic sounding D2D, which usually are just very “direct” and dynamic sounding for whatever reason.
People are happy like crazy getting an e.g. digitally sourced Resonance label recording with bootleg sound quality, but one of the best sounding D2D releases is still available cheaply. Sometimes I don’t understand the audiophile market.
Sometimes it’s about the music. One might be more interested in the work of the artist on the “bootleg” recording than the artist on the D2D or other audiophile release. Personally I’d rather listen to mediocre sound quality recordings of artists I’m very interested in than audiophile recordings of artists I’m less interested in.
That’s certainly true, I also don’t have any interest in audiophile but inferior music. This is just an example where both is great. And I’d say with some exceptions many of the out take or rediscovered concerts releases are not extremely precious either.
I agree. The sound is relaxed and gorgeous.
Yes, it’s about the performance and the artist. At times when listening to an Audiophile recording I got the impression it was no more than marketing a mediocre performance. I name no names.
We’re all different. I wasn’t too impressed with either of those releases when I heard them, and I do prefer to listen to concerts from the past that Resonance et al have been bringing to light. Even in a niche market like jazz it’s great that there are enough releases available new and used on various formats to make many happy.
Yes I agree with both of you. Music wise Resonance maybe was no good example as I also have nearly all of them and most performances are really nice to have and some really great. I think my main point was, reading how many named those as reference sound quality recordings and how much better those two D2D sound, I sometimes wonder.
Generally I’d say D2D usually more or less guarantees crap music. I saw those as some of the exceptions.
Lucky @stevensegal can go there!

Yes, I wouldn’t claim any of them are audiophile, though one of the Evans was quite nice.
It’s a great time to be alive as a music lover–so much out there and still coming to enjoy.
Should be quite a show.
Yes. Agreed. So much out there. And to have the means to maintain a decent sound system.
