Hey @weedeewop, how’s your pressing quality of Sun Ra at Haverford RSD LP? Mine is terrible and it visually looks like a bootleg. As folks on Discogs are saying, the vinyl seems to be hit or miss. My other RSD releases sound amazing.
Hey @jazzophile, mine has issues as well, summing up 18 craackles, buzzes, Zzzzt, on side A. Side B has 9. Funny thing they are all specific to the Haverford recordings not the two acoustic piano trackB-3 and B4. I wonder if there may have been significant deterioration of the source tape. Wish they’d stop with the colored vinyl and stick with carbon black as the latter tends to be quieter. I plan to return to the Qobuz version to determine if the vinyl, the pressing or the source tape is at the root of this.
Here’s my summary that I have forwarded to jay at Modern Harmonic. Hopefully they’ll make this right.
As far as the performance, I am proud to have added it to my collection!
Sun Ra Haverford
Modern Harmonic/Sundazed
Noisy release:
The performance outstanding, The playback quality not outstanding. Many crackles, buzzes, and Zzzzt sounds on sides A (total 18) & B (total 9), specifically tracks A-1 to A-4, B-1 and B-2. Tracks B3 and B4 play clean. In between the intermittent noises the sound is excellent. Considering the Haverford sourced material has all the noise issues and they sound similar I the source tape is suspect. With time it may have deteriorated. I’ll return to the Qobuz version for comparison to determine if it is the vinyl or the source tape. As others have mentioned the Gold vinyl may be noisy as well, my preference for quiet vinyl is carbon black. Timings for intermittent noises: A-Side 1:10, 1:17, 1:53, 2:08, 3:07, 3:17, 3:26, 3:31, 4:21, 5:31, 5:53, 6:52, 6:54, &:42, 8:12, 9:49, 9:55, 12:32. B-Side: 4:39, 5:20, 5:21, 7:38, 8:05, 10:03, 11:42, 11:44, 13:12. Hopefully Modern Harmonic/Sundazed makes this right. Apparently they are aware of the problem, Contact them with the issues, your address, etc at jay@sundazed.com.
Listening to the Qobuz version of Sun Ra Haverford, the problem lies in the vinyl press. The distortions (?) on the Qobuz release are typical of the Fender Rhodes of the day, and live college recordings for a Sun Ra Concert.
