Going back to an early introduction to the avant-garde sound, 1972’s ECM release of Circle Paris-Concert, featuring Chick Corea, Anthony Braxton, Dave Holland, and Barry Altschul. Refelecting on my first listen I thought this was far out, and a bit of a stretch for my uninitiated ears. Little did I know where it would lead.

Continuing with the theme of my early days exploring jazz; music that shaped today’s listening habits. The Art Ensemble of Chicago Fanfare for the Warrior. Lester, Roscoe, Joseph, Malachi, and Famoudou. Fanfare for the Warriors features Roscoe Mitchell’s Nonaah. Today this LP sounds tame, but my first listen opened my ears to a new world. There would be more from Art Ensemble of Chicago, as they proclaim Ancient to the Future.

Henry Threadgill, Fred Hopkins, and Steve McCall, Air Air Song on India Navigation vinyl. This album further informed of what was musically possible, with a certain Chicago sensibility of the time. I dug deep into the India Navigation label, buying up each new release as it appeared. The journey becomes considerably more serious.

AIR-McCall, Hopkins, Threadgill.
