Strictly Jazz Sounds (Part 2)

Wayne Shorter’s Night Dreamer, Wayne’s first BN release, and it is a strong effort with a super quintet, Tyner, Workman, Jones, and Morgan.

Wayne Shorter brought me here, for Kurt’s fine cover of Night Dreamer, retitled Night Dream. This is a solid set with Laurence Hobgood on piano from Chicago’s famed Green Mill Lounge Jazz club, which I plan on attending this Friday and possibly Saturday.

This was one of the jazz albums in my parents’ collection. I have the copy now. … pretty noisy; I have the music in the Mosaic cd set and listen to it that way–but a great LP and a foundation of my musical world.

I wish I had the extra material that was only offered briefly on Elling’s website!

Its pretty common in the Chicago area so scoring a clean quiet copy isn’t too difficult.

I’m not in the Chicago area, and I have never seen a copy of the “exclusive to Kurt Elling’s website” additional cd material.

Nice clean sounding recording, and fairly representative of his late 70’s to early 80’s efforts. The piece Immortal Trip is quite the sonic space journey, there are moments it reminds me of the sound track referencing the Krell from George Pal’s Forbidden Planet.

I wonder if recording engineer and Pro Musica owner Ken Christianson may have those. Good chance he does. I’ll inquire next time I see him in Chicago.

Back to basics:

That voice! She really had an effortless way of interpreting and swinging.
