Sad to learn it is warped. My copy is flat as an Illinois landscape!
I am fortunate to have a local friend that will correct any warped LPs with his Furutech LP Flattener DF-2. Over the last several years I have received more warped records new than I would have expected. When I first started purchasing records warps were not much of an issue, but vinyl quality and surface noise were. I might add, specific to USA pressings.
I too have been surprised at the percentage of new releases that have warps. You are lucky to have access to the Furutech/Orb flattener. I am seriously considering purchasing this product, although there does not seem to be a US distributor……
Nice! Need to dig this one out, haven’t listened to it in a while. AF rocks!
I’d say 9 out of 10 records are warped. I have the ORB and it works great at as far as I remember less than half the price of the AF.
I was thinking about the Orb DF01iA+ ….Apparently the AFI has some additional functionality…Not sure what the current price is for the AFI, hoping to get a response from the German distributor.
Kenny Burrell with Coleman Hawkins “Bluesy Burrell” Moodsville/Prestige RVG Edition Japan cd
A young master with an older master and that Moodsville vibe. Just what I needed right now.
I wonder how much it would cost in the US. I’ve been spoiled to have access to a Furutech locally.
If it is as effective as the Furutech, then the Orb is a bargain. My recent experience with warped new records is 10-15%. Used records are typically flat, less than 5% have a warp. Iwas most impressed with the Furutech’s ability to correct a severely dished LP with a major localized edge warp. The edge warp looked as though the LP was handled while still hot off the press. Apparently three passes did the trick.
Orb Flattener
Not sure what another useful functionality could be to be honest…the ORB also has different programs.
Returning to all things musical, versus gear, there is this Arista Freedom Ted Curson LP, I picked up most likely in the Record Service cut-out bin:
The jacket notch is a dead give away of a most fine performance!
The ensemble on Flip Top remains the same as that listed for Ted Curson Tears For Dolphy.
I’m going to look for this one. Yes, I think most of my AF titles have the cutout notch!
Continuing with a Ted Curson theme, I picked this up recently, within the last 6 years at a local Madison used record shop that unfortunately is no more, Resale Records.
Resale Records, Madison,Wisconsin a wonderfully under the radar shop down the street from a favorite watering hole. I loved the aesthetic, a dingy dark lit quonset hut. Locals would stop in to talk, trade and buy. Many times large jazz collecions would arrive unannounced. The owner, Erik, believed in the pricing model he grew up with while in college. Records typically went for $3-4, and a high priced one might go for as much as $6! I mention this as he went out of his way to show me the above Ted Curson Live At La’Tete De L’Art. ThinkingI might be interested in it he offered it to me asking what I’d like to pay. I had no idea of its value and said maybe next time. He countered with, Well I was considering $5. Considering it was Ted Curson, I couldn’t pass it up, not realizing its rarity and true value. At the time copies were going for an average of $500! I went back with the notion of returning it thinking he had made an error. He would have none of it, knowing its value all along. His thought being he needed to make room for the next arrival of incoming records.
He passed away shortly there after, due to some undiagnosed health issues. Sad as he was at most in his early fifties. The store still stands with records awaiting collectors. I still miss him and our conversations, sometimes over a beer at the local watering hole Tip Top Tavern.
ORB produces the Furutech for them, based on the ORB flattener as as a cosmetically luxurized version. My ORB so far flattened every record on the first run, it really works and is sincerely necessary, hardly any new record not needing a flattening.
Well either I am having incredibly good luck wit my acquisitions or your luck is just not too great.
Did not know the Furutech was made by Orb. As I’m not in the market never gave it much consideration. As far as one LP needing three passes, neither Nick or I thought the LP could be restored, it was dished better than 1/2 inch, or 1.25 cm, and the compounded edge warp was in excess of 1/2 inch. I t was a " last of " new LP I purchased from Trost records in Austria. Konstantin, Trost Proprietor, was beside himself as no replacements were available, so Furutech to the rescue! My mention o the need for three pass was to indicate the severity of the record warps, not an indictment of the flattener.
