Kenny Dorham “Whistle Stop” Blue Note Japan 24bit by RVG cd
A few years ago I made my Blue Note recordings harder to find (almost all my collection is in bookcases where I have four rows of cds, two behind and two in front, so the Blue Note were put in rows behind others) as I was playing them so often, but now it’s time to listen to more Blue Notes, especially the 24bit by RVG series from Japan, so I moved those to front rows of a book case.
Kenny and Hank are always a good combo! Add Philly Joe, Paul and Kenny Drew and you have a hard bop showcase.
Actually Kenny’s first recording for the label was “Afro Cuban” in 1955, first as a 10" LP then expanded to 12". . . . After that he recorded the live at the Cafe Bohemia material, originally a 12" LP but enough has been released that a complete 2 cd edition eventually appeared from Blue Note in the US and Japan.
Then came “Whistle Stop” in 1961 for Blue Note, his first stereo outing for the label.

Decided to pick-up a handful of these during the most recent SquidCo sale. I’ve the original LP, and Calibre CD. My intent being to compare the two CDs. Prior to any comparison, this one to my ear sounds clean and lively. John Gilmore’s saxophone solo on Sun Ra and His Band From Outer Space, offers up a more close up perspective than what I vaguely remember from the Calibre CD. I’ll add the drum kit, especially cymbals, is a bit forward and spread rather wide. Overall happy with the sound. Now for a comparison listen.
Calibre ESP CD 1045
The Calibre CD offers up the same number of songs and sequence as the original ESP-Disk 1045 LP release, 8 songs. A different sequence and 4 additional songs are offered on the ezz-thetics CD release.
For comparison purposes, the edit and transition from Sun Ra and His Band From Outer Space to Shadow World are different. On the Calibre release Gilmore’s sax has less presence and bite, piano is set back a little more, drum kit and cymbals sound more natural and in their proper place. The two are clearly different, the ezz-thetics drums are a bit over the top, but piano and sax are clearer. Sonny’s clavioline sounds more “natural” (as if that’s possible) and is much easier to differentiate from Ronnie Boykin’s parallel arco bass line on the Calibre CD. Saxes playing in unison sound a little more crushed and ever so slightly congested on the Calibre CD. Glad I have both CD versions. Those who do not have Sun Ra ArkestraNothing Is … would be well served to pick up the recent ezz-thetics release IMO.
Thank you Roon Radio! This is an excellent set that I probably would never have heard - a little Ken Vandermark goes a long way with me. But, this is really nice. Sax, drums, analog synthesizer, trombone, awesome!
Well, a friend just shared this with me, and I thought it best to share it here. No words to describe it. Stick with it and you’ll not be disappointed. Not much to add as his music is beyond words. At 31:00 minutes Keith reacts to a performance he had forgotten, Miles Davis’sSolar. It moved me.
The incredible Keith Jarrett as interviewed by Rick Beato:
