Sunlight: Installation and Technical Issues

Got it. Same files, but different presentation.

Interesting quirk.

Yeah, Iā€™ve used these thing for over a year now and itā€™s great. I canā€™t rip SACDā€™s (too complicated and convoluted of a process).

I can legitimately play the SACD layer from my Sony UBP-X1000 using these adapter boards and USB DSD files along with DSD files on my Hard Drives on my Server via DLNA networking. But 256fs/128fs via I2S wonā€™t work as Iā€™ve explained in the post.

You probably need to ask the device manufacturer, thereā€™s no protocol for the DS to control anything. Unless you are saying that its DSD128 works with Windom and not Sunlight.

I have the Oppomod board in my Oppo player. Iā€™m working till 8am tomorrow but Iā€™ll check it when I get home to see if it works with Sunlight and let you know of any issues.

Hi Ted,

Thanks for chiming in. DSD 128fs always worked via your USB input and the DSSr. displays DOP. So that was never an issue Windom or Sunlight.

I wish I had taken a picture of the Display when 256fs was working via the I2S input that was fed from the green adapter board.

You are correct, and I understand. This is aftermarket device and the company should be of help. But I doubt it. Honestly, Iā€™m very very happy with DSD64 playback via the I2S inputs.

Iā€™m a ā€œbad Audiophileā€ in that I donā€™t care for comparisonā€™s between Windom & Sunlight.

If Darren Myers says itā€™s an improvement. Iā€™m good with that. I trust his ears and the products heā€™s designed.

Did you try to load Windom to see if it works again?

Not surprising.

Yeah. Did the old Windom ā€”> Sunlight ā€”> Windom ā€”> Sunlight and no luck. Itā€™s not the end of the World, but if yours works and mine doesnā€™t, then I donā€™t know what to say.

Ill give it a try tomorrow morning. Mine is an internal mounted board so Iā€™m not sure how similar it is to the adapter you are using.

When you have time Paul, click the links I put on my own ā€œreplyā€ post. Itā€™s a different board for sure, but it may work if it was designed to pass 256 DSD. I donā€™t think mine is even though it worked momentarily.

I only use the Oppo for SACDā€™s and that would limit the card to DSD 64. I use a Roon Nucleus via a Matrix Spdif II for DSD 128 and DSD 256.

Hi Elk,
I think you are managing the forumā€™s data base, right?
Iā€™m a German customer since few years now.
I like the PSA devices, particularly the design philosophy by Paul, Darren and all the others of the entire Team.
In case of Sunlight, I assume the enthusiasm of the sonic improvements had beaten the quality checks which usually are applied before releasing the product. This halfens the joy of the customers about the final present. Can we expect another update? What do you think?

Indeed Auto input select on the Jr is broken. A wonky half work around is to press volume up or down or mute and unmute or change polarity twice will get the sound back.

[Edit: I sent @jamesh email with a link to your posts so he can look at your bridge issues.]

Hi, @bruenm

PS Audio was careful to make sure there are no problems with Sunlight. There will be no update to Sunlight unless a major bug is found. This is unlikely. There will be no further firmware updates to the DSD as the DAC is being replaced with another new piece of equipment.

Using your Roon app is also an easy way to change the volume. For many who donā€™t use the PS Audio remote regularly (and have Roon), this may be a convenient way to get the sound going after an input change. Itā€™s been working well for me.

A closing phase on the DSD, what a ride. :cowboy_hat_face:

TRADUCTION AUTO GOOGLE FRANCAIS / ANGLAIS :

I tried everything with the DIrectStream JR to switch from WINDOW to SUNLIGTH: in vain!

  1. tested 6 USB keys from 8 to 32 GB formatted in FAT 32, in EFAT, and even under MAC OS (on a PC & a MAC).
  2. cleaned the contacts of the USB keys and DirectStream JR with household alcohol, then insert and extract the key ten times.
  3. Unplug all cables from the DAC before turning it on with the USB stick inserted in the slot.
  4. Only two USB sticks out of the six tested light up the flashing blue PSAUDIO logo when the DAC is powered on.
  5. the flashing lasts for almost a minute, but SUNLIGTH will not charge; WINDOW remains in place.
  6. I have tried to load all versions of the software from YALE to SNOWMASS: in vain! no version is installed ā€¦
  7. I sent an email to the French PSAUDIO distributor to request the shipment of a functional USB key; no answer for the moment.
The installation of the various software upgrades has always been a very delicate problem to resolve each time (at least with the version intended for DirectStream JR).
Do you have a viable solution? Can PS AUDIO USA send me a working DirectStream JR USB stick?

Thank you all for your help.

Arry.

Hello, For my part I have the Senior Directstream.
But if I can help you
I donā€™t know what PSAUDIO recommends as a formatting type for the USB key. But I know that for the SD card you need FAT32.
As for the files to put on the key you should have these:
DSJ0402.hex
fjr15318.hex
LOADER.CFG
USBL0021.hex
that it is the software you are using to unpack the file. I use winrar
