Over time, a P12 Powerplant and a BHK Preamp have been added to the system. The M700 monoblocks are now hidden. And have added a close-up photo of the Sonist Audio Concerto 4 speakers.
I think i’ve posted pics of some of the gear, but not this photo. Main living room with Harbeth P3ESR’s and a Cambridge Audio sub. (All the components are hidden in a closet that’s behind the orange couch, accessible from a different room.)
I suppose if I have to ride 2020 out somewhere, it might as well be here.
I have a mint pair of ML SL3’s as well, sitting in my old bedroom in my old house that I grew up in. I have been debating whether or not to bring them over to our house and hook them up on the main system. They ARE great sounding speakers. They even put out ample bass.
I can’t imagine your friend’s system sounding all that good though with those poor SL3’s smashed up against the wall, especially that left one crammed into the corner like that. Those panels need some breathing room to sound their best.
My old setup from a few years ago…
Hi Chops, you are absolutely correct, but I had to be extremely diplomatic when I took the picture. That evening I met his new spouse the first time, and if she is anything like my wife, he has to fight over every square inch that separates the speakers from the wall / corner. But we agreed to meet again soon. I‘ll get the message to them it’s a matter of time, listening and beer .
But those SL3‘s do indeed sound extremely good. Even positioned so close to the wall. I read the instructions, the minimum distance between rear and subwoofer enclosure should be approximately the size of the Subwoofers diameter. So 10“, but it seems to get best with 2 to 3 ft.
Nice! How was the effect of the Isoacoustics under the sub?
Are those custom top plates on the PS Audio gear?
WANT!
The IsoAcoustics really does a great job of cleaning up the slight “bloom” in the lower registers. You get better definition between notes and sharper attack, even with these somewhat cheap Polk subs…
I am guessing you have “black” PS Audio components?
The silver sides/black top are standard with the silver BHK products and P12/P15/P20.
The M700 monos (that are behind the lower tv) are 100% silver all around except for the feet.
The early Watt/Puppy‘s?
Enough bloom with the hybrid amps?
How do you like that sub? Going back and forth between that and Fathom!
The sound is a beautiful warm presentation with just enough fast bass. They’re one owner, Watt Puppy’s 5.1. I have, revised for 2020, tweeters from Wilson to replace the old Focal tweeters coming. These tweeters are new to the market from Wilson and are their replacement for all Watts going forward. Three more weeks and counting. They are 20 years old but look and sound as new. I’m on the fence about subwoofers. I’m looking at 212’s from REL.
If possible, move the audio rack to the side, you can leave the monoblocks there. It will greatly improve the center image and depth, etc,.
Well, I have the two JL Audio e110 subs, then I have the Polk Audio PSW 505 subs.
The JL subs have a little greater detail, are a little tighter, and have more tuning flexibility. The Polk subs I think actually dig slightly deeper, they tend to be a bit more tonal accurate and blend better with the mains.
Lastly, the Polk subs are nearly 12 years old now, and I have not had one single issue with them whatsoever. No hums, buzzes, rattles, nothing. They’ve been perfect little performers the entire time.
The JL subs on the other hand, over a short period of time, the gain and crossover dials get super noisy, completely randomly. It starts off a few weeks earlier where if you go to adjust either the gain or crossover point, those dials just by slightly turning them or even just lightly tapping them cuts the sound in and out, or makes really loud scratchy noises. And when I say loud, I mean to the point that the woofer actually pops out nearly 2 inches! They eventually get to the point to where there’s just a 60 Hz scratchy hum that comes blasting through the subs where again, the drivers are moving near or more than 2 inches! It scares the crap out of you.
This is exactly why they are laying in the closet for the past year and the Polk’s are out in the main system. I have sent both JL amps back to JL twice to either be repaired or replaced. The repair/replacement only lasts a few months before it starts doing this mess all over again, and it costs nearly $400 per amp, which I refuse to do anymore. I’m not wasting any more money on the things.
And keep in mind, these JL subs were doing all of this back when we were still living in that 3rd floor apartment! So those subs were never played loud and/or abused. Hate to say it, but these are the first and last home audio JL products I’m ever buying.
I’ve had these JL subs going on 3 years, and for two of those years, the things have been totally inoperable.
For now, I will gladly stick with my old and trusted Polk subs.
Wow I’m bummed to hear that about JL. May have to look again at REL. Thanks for the detailed response!
You should try the Isoacoustics on your speakers. I have them on my subs, speakers, and, all my components. The ones under my main speakers made the biggest difference, by a mile.
That is no exaggeration too from Kyle. I have them under my LS50’s. Which have amazing cabinets. Yet the sound difference and more importantly improvement was not subtle.
Love your space @Chops
Which products from Isoacoustics?
Gaia 2 on subs, Gaia Titan Theis on speakers, pucks on components.
