Hi Steven,
Yes D7 is better in that it could be placed closer to the wall, and weightier bottom frequencies. I have a Dynaudio sub when I am in the mood for bass.
Wall support for the P10 is a possibility but not this residence. We have heat pumps / air conditioners in all rooms and we are relocating in 9 months. The spikes for individual shelves, and the mass of the shelves is helping. Prior to receiving the power plant, I had concerns about mechanical, electromagnetic, and electrical interference, Apheta 2 (current cartridge) did not show any audible degradation after the PP was added. So, I will hold things for a while. I liked the HiFi Racks TT support you had with the old system.
Everybody says the P8 is amazing. I considered upgrading from RP8 / Apheta2 ( about five years old) by adding the RB3000 tonearm & Apheta3. Then I decided to go for the P10 straight.
The rack is Atacama Evoque Eco with 40mm shelves made of carbonized high density bamboo, with sonic isolation supports.
I just bought a VAULT 2i
High-Res 2TB Network Hard Drive CD Ripper and Stream cheaper. I use the one in the cottage. During the winter months, I lend them out to my friends so they can have their regular CDs digitized.
I’d get one of those in a heartbeat to replace my Node 2i, if I didn’t so often have trouble with the BluOS app on my phone and iPad. 90% of the time it works great, but then for no reason I can discern, the apps lose contact with the Node and no particular rebooting/reconnecting action I can discern will bring it back, other than the passage of time and the random acts of the network gods. Otherwise, when it’s happy, I love the sound and convenience of the unit, and would think about the only thing more that I would like is internal file storage.
Just added these “cloud” room treatments along and above the sectional for slap echo reduction. These were supplied from GIK acoustics in a rather dull plain white fabric so I had to re-cover in wool blend hound’s tooth fabric. They look much better and I think have tightened up the sonic image a bit.
Also, have two of these diffusor/absorber panels coming tomorrow. One will go on the front wall between the speakers and the other will go on the kitchen island just behind the primary listening position. Hoping to further mitigate the removal of the rug on the floor (too much cat hair to vacuum off that every week).
EDIT: Also had to modify the GIK “cloud” brackets as the panels look REALLY goofy hanging a couple inches from the ceiling. I know I’ve compromised the bass trapping performance, but even I had to admit the look was really weird/unacceptable. These still provide good broadband absorption albeit with less bass frequency flattening (which is handled quite well with all the tri-traps in each corner).
Hi,
Noticed the record clamp/weight on the spindle of the Planar 10.
Can you tell me the brand name and where did you purchase it ?
I own (and LOVE) a Planar 8 and I was under the impression due to its short and stubby spindle, you could not use a clamp/weight.
Thanks,
Tom - NJ
That’s what I’d been led to believe was that Rega’s don’t fare well with weights due to the sensitive motor system. I bought a really lovely GrooveTracer weight before I knew this, but never use it anymore since I heard that and have not found that I’ve ever needed it in fact.
Hi Twablt,
P8 is a wonderful machine. Re your question, this is a simple record stabiliser weight that you put on the spindle. It is manufactured by Analogue Studio, and can be purchased online from this company:
If you are planning to buy a clamp instead of just a weight, please note Rega Turntables have short spindles, so the clamp must be designed for Rega. Also, if you end up buying one that requires pressure then tightening, take extra care when applying vertical force.
Good luck
This stainless steel weight was carried over from the RP8 after I abandoned the Michell clamp. What you’re saying is very important to me. I was thinking that the weight of the platter on both P8 and P10 is like (Edit: many times the weight of the stabiliser!) It makes me wonder if it is the tuning rather than the weight itself! I will do some testing with and without.
