I was told Rega does NOT want any device on their spindles.
Did you consult Rega or your Planar 10 salesperson before buying this stabilizer clamp ?
Thanks,
Tom - NJ
Origin live have brought out a record weight that weighs only 70 grammes. More a stabilising and damping device.
Yes, they cut all the weight that can retain and retransmit energy to the tonearm (and eventually cartridge motor) while maintaining a good level of rigidity. Also, they still use good weight platters to maintain the flywheel effect, and couple that with good sub-platter and ultra low friction bearings. I will ask the dealer for recommendations tomorrow. It would feel odd playing LPs without something to weigh them down
Analogue Studio weight is 450 grams. May be it is time to search for the Michell clamp specially designed for Rega.
Any experience with it?
I have a Mitchell Clamp have yet to try it as sans clamp the P8 sounds fine, maybe a touch light on the bottom end. It is coming into its own after 100 spins on the new table/cartridge.
No consultation was done for P10 or RP8. I took things for granted.
Try an A/B test.
What I found was with the weight on, there was a definite increase in noise floor
I also found the soundstage reduced quite noticeably.
I didn’t find the weight added anything to the sound, rather quite the opposite.
That’s on a 2016 Planar 3, I would have thought the P10 would be even more sensitive to the extra weight.
YES the one with the “R”
Here’s the link to Music Direct site:
It does not. Standard Mitchell clamp I used with a different set-up mainly for warped records. I no longer use it. Considering the research that went into theP8/P10 if either benefited from a weight/clamp Rega would have provided the table with one. Then again maybe not, especially considering the felt mat provided with the table.
The R type is about a third thinner. When trying to tighten it on 180g or 220g vinyl it would come loose quite often. Forget the felt washer even on average records.
I have heard the different Rega’s and I do love their sound and philosophy. I am in the other camp of mass and viscous damping to get rid of unwanted resonance. Sounds not bad also!! The Titanium Pathe Wing clamp is 965gm!! On a mass loaded turntable, a heavy clamp actually improves performance. The Symposium Ultra is not just for looks, the damn thing actually is like a component upgrade!! Way better dynamic and way better realistic sounding!! We should all get back to the superior sound of vinyl!!
By the looks of it, I should be addressing this in a vinyl thread. Anyway, I have done the tests of record stabilization on the P10 as follows:
- 1 pound precision cut billet stainless steel weight: bass and mid-bass well pronounced, especially pianos and double bass. Soundstage is close to the listening seat.
- Low profile Michell clamp designed for Rega short spindle: effects are similar to the stabilizing weight with a tad more air.
- Record on platter without a clamp or stabilizing weight: stage moved behind speakers. Bass got taut and instrument decays are noticeable. Higher frequencies became clearer (not harsh at all) and the instruments gained more air to them.
No decision re making them them redundant yet. Weights and clamps will be on LWP (leave without pay) till further notice
Why did you purchase the most expensive REGA and add a puck?
The P8 and P10 are the most expensive turntables of that brand because they practiced their philosophy of weight reduction (avoidance of mass) to the extreme in order to extract the best sound from the record.
You are just adding unnecessary weight to the bearing of the platter which adds rumble.
Pucks are for big steel sculpture mass intensive turntable designs. These utilize a philosophy of more mass is better and often magnet lfield supported rigid bearings.
But on the P8 or P10 the use of a puck defeats REGA’s “less mass is better” philosophy.
Hi Rudolf,
The egg was there before the chicken anyway.
Just installed the absorber/diffuser panels last night. One on front wall between speakers and one on kitchen island just behind primary listening position. They look quite “smart” and my wonderfully accepting wife likes them too.
Will report back on sonic improvements after some critical listening.
EDIT: These are 2" Impressions Series from GIK Acoustics.
EDIT2: Have started critical listening just this evening. I am at a loss for words (I know any dyed in the wool audiophile should be ashamed to admit this). ROOM TREATMENT is never to be underestimated again by me at least. One word keeps coming to mind and that’s sublime. I’m sure there’s no such thing as “perfect” but wow are we getting ever closer.
EDIT3: Since the previous edit was a bit wishy-washy I’ll try to explain the sonic improvements I noticed last night.
There’s more detail without any “analytical” side effects. I think the reverberation / decay is also shortened which more accurately captures the recording. This seems to translate into less congestion and allows each individual instrument and sound to be more fully realized (harmonic richness and subtle nuance are more easily observed as well as improved sound stage / vocal & instrument placement). Frequency response top to bottom is better with lots of midrange “warmth” without that congestion mentioned above (not syrupy). These room treatments have also passed the less scientific “toe tap” test where you just can’t help really getting into the music that you’ve known and loved for years. And finally, the “weeping” test where the same familiar music causes uncontrolled tears. That’s the best I can do without having you hear it for yourselves. VERY PLEASED INDEED!
EDIT4: And…I forgot the other most important test of sound quality. It’s the “pee” test. You’re enjoying the music so much you won’t go to the bathroom!
@Serhan where did you get that cool PS Audio illuminated sign? Is it a product they sell or some kind of display device where you can select the image? Enquiring minds want to know.
Thanks,
Kurt
Hi Kurt,
I got it from https://www.groveengravers.com/ Go to products, audio signs, then select PS Audio sign. When ordering try the discount code ENJOY. Hopefully, it still works.
They provide it with a USB cable, but not a USB wall-wart. It comes with a very interesting remote control that keeps me busy trying colours, transitions etc.
Loved them!
