The DS and Roon after the delivery of RoonReady

+1.

Thanks Volpone!

So if customizable views are supported, great and even if assets are not yet supported, getting related artist/album info linked in from somewhere else on the internet directly from play now screen on a Apple device is fine I guess. I understood, such artist/album related info is fetched from internet and provided in time by roon.

Are you sure, Roon offers an on the fly (just after selecting and playing a flac file to i.e. the bridge) flac to wave conversion (not applied to dsf certainly)?

if I can’t use my custom genre tags, I’m out

Just signed up here to correct this -- Hi Paul! Hope you don't mind me dropping in

When Roon launched we got a lot of feedback about our handling of genres, and we responded by updating this functionality back in August. In the current implementation, you get two On|Off switches: Show Genres From File Tags, and Show Roon Genres.

We’re still planning some work for later this year to improve our handling of classical music, but genres are already fully editable in Roon. If you’re looking to import your collection and only see your genre tags, this is possible today with about 3 clicks.

Thanks much Mike!

So if genres are kept, that’s most important to me, as I didn’t structure other tags so far (except using Songkong).

However I see the need to modify my classical albums. Something like putting composer (i.e. Mozart) in artist tag, composer+opus (i.e. Mozart, Piano concert) in album tag and conductor in a separate tag or similar.

In case Roon offers a different but reliable and consistent automatic structuring, this might be even better and saving time.

Unfortunately my trial of roon doesn’t start on my WIN 8.1 64bit PC with “Load library failed error 87, wrong parameter”, so I didn’t get far enough to try myself. But I don’t ask for your support here, I think I can find a solution somewhere in your forum.

Elk said Hi, Mike!

We are delighted to have you here. There is a lot of excitement over Roon.

In addition to genre tags, can one elect to use your own tags in other fields. We classical nerds in particular are often going to want to keep our organizational schemes.

Great to be here, and thanks for the warm welcome, everyone!

The vast majority of fields in Roon can now be edited, as of our August release. Roon reads all the information out of your file tags and stores them in our database. During import Roon’s metadata is also populated into the database, stored in its own layer and displayed in Roon by default.

If you don’t like Roon’s data for a given field, you can use your own tags. And since the information from your tags is stored in its own layer separate from Roon’s metadata, your files are never modified and the Roon layer can continue to get automatic weekly metadata updates, regardless of how you’ve chosen to display your music in Roon.

All the above covers the display of your tags in Roon. There is one more piece of editing that’s still to come, which we’re planning to release later this year along with a number of features targeted at classical music. This is the editing of the links that Roon generates in your library.

Roon works to automatically retrieves performer, composer, and production credits for every album in your library, each of which links to richly detailed pages of biographical information, TIDAL content, and more. Editing of these links is coming, but you can always display and categorize your albums however you want, and it’s also possible to change (or discard) Roon’s identification for any album.

I could blab about this for hours (ask Paul) but I’m not going to clog up this forum too much. If you have any questions (or @jazznut if you need some help getting up and running) definitely get in touch with me directly, guys. Thanks all!

Thank you, Mike. This sounds quite neat.

Please do not worry about clogging up the forum. This thread is about Roon and we are delighted to learn more. Many are excited about your product.

Mike, some of us here really like technical and informative posts such as yours. Yes, welcome to the PS Audio forum and please keep it up with the communication. We have several representatives from other companies whose products operate and/or interact with PS Audio’s products. We appreciate their contributions to our discussions and better understanding of their products and how to make best use of them.

I really appreciate one detail from your last post: that Roon does not overwrite the metadata in our libraries, rather keeps a database of both our tags and Roon’s tags. I am not yet a Roon convert, but this information removes one great concern that I have, in that I have expended a great deal of time and energy in getting the metadata in my library exactly how I like it.

Again, please continue with your interaction and information here. I look forward to learning more about Roon, yourself and how your world works, at least your audio world.

J.P.

Mike,

I second everything J.P. said, especially his comments about metadata.

One more question: can I get Roon to display custom tags that I have put in my FLAC files as well as use my own information for more standard items like artist and composer?

The links to additional information that Roon provides could be very useful. That feature might even be enough to overcome my dislike of using a Windows or Mac computer for playback–I bought a Bridge to avoid that. In a perfect world, I could install Roon directly on my NAS as I do now with MinimServer. Might that be an option in the future, at least for NAS drives with a certain level of processing power?

Yes and Mike and the others on the Roon site have been very helpful and responsive with their support I might add.

Yes welcome Mike! I guess I’m of a different opinion here in that I would at least like the option of changing metadata in the file. I have spent literally hundreds of hours editing my classical tags in JRMC and all that labor is only usable by JR because of the library format you describe. If however it saved the info to the file, it would at least be available to any server app. Now, whether the sever app will be able to display it would be app dependent but at least it would be there to use.

As long as we’re giving wish lists, then, given the info above, it would be fantastic if Roon could import libraries from other players, like JRMC obviously, then be able to embed that data.

that’s why I try to do any change on the original tags and let JR use them.

But I thought you can also transfer your JR tags to the original tags and use those later in Roon if you want to move, right?

Oh, oh, oh please tell me how. That would solve my problem.

I put as much info in as I can when I rip but with XLD. I had most of my collection ripped by a service years ago, so that is where most of the work is.

The checkbox “update tags when file info changes” in “options-General” cares for updating real tags from JR.

The checkbox “update for external changes” in “Option-Library & Folders-Configure auto-import” cares for updating JR tags from real tags.

But be sure to test this an see what happens if the one or the other is checked and changes are done and what happens when both are checked and changes are done.

I would generally switch the first off and the second on and only shortly before switching to Roon (if you want) do the opposite. I don’t trust it too much.

I am looking forward to Roon compatibility on the Bridge for my DS. I am a confirmed fan. I tried out Roon, installing it on my Baetis Revolution, and deactivating JRMC on that machine. I upgraded to Win10, and added a lit toe 7-inch screen and keyboard, so the whole thing could sit on one shelf of my server rack. Works great. The Roon+iPad client is so much more reliable than mconnect or anything else controlling minim server. (Just to be clear, I like ms running on my Synology NAS, but controllers for it all seem to have one flakiness or another or a combination of several that make the whole affair less than rock solid.) Having Roon monitor the NAS has been outstanding. When I first tried it, I ran it for a week solid, with zero interruption, until I had to reconfigure the server and take the machine offline. That was enough to convince me. I paid up for a lifetime subscription.

Now, Roon is running as core on the Baetis, and it is delivering music to both my Totaldac and NADAC units in my headphone listening station. And also every AppleTV, two of my screens (but why bother), and both my OPPO disc players. I wish it could deliver music simultaneously to my DACs, but that’s the least of my problems. SQ is excellent, and the client UI is a joy and simple for my family members (in contrast to JRMC, which is IMHO not pleasant to use; YMMV). It would/will be so grand to bring Roon to the DS.

Hello again everybody.

Do we have any update or news regarding the bridge compatibility with Roon? The list of compatible hardware is being populated with new arrivals (Auralic, Sonore, etc), all of them with similar features to those of the bridge. So, no reason for doing a lateral movement. However, could we have a better clue about the lenght of our potential waiting? Thx in advance for any info.

Yes, we have it working and I am testing it now in Music Room One!!

There’s still a bit of skipping on higher resolution audio, but other than that. it works well. We need some debugging time, but it looks like it will be happening!

Bugs often take a long while to resolve.

Great news, Paul, thanks. So are we talking of a Roon endpoint which will need a computer anyway, for doing the “hard task”, right?.

Yes, exactly. It’s an end point, still needs Roon running on a computer attached to the LAN.

Hi Paul

I assume this will also work with the PWD in addition to Direct stream, correct?

magicknow

You bet.

Hi Paul, I was wondering if there is any update on Roonready for the DS?

Thanks!
