The final release of Massive for MK2 DAC

Welcome back Ted, we have really missed not having you here. I have downloaded the new release, but have not yet installed it it. Will do so soon.

Ted,
This latest version has cured the audible noise problem in my system.
Apparently, most people did not hear the noise on their systems.

Were you ever able to determine why certain people’s systems did have the noise and others did not?

Glad to see this update. However, when playing my Oppo 205, with HDMI to I2S converter connected to my MK2, it just shows the input name without any bit rate. Before this update, it did show DSD 64 (albeit tiny font) when playing SACD’s. Is there a setting that needs to be changed? Also, still no green light on this input. And by the way, this sounds spectacular!

Not to my satisfaction. I finally made significant progress by just assuming everyone had the same problem and doing very detailed simulations the FPGA. I’m still on the lookout for why some systems had less noise since I didn’t explicitly address that.

Apparently, there was a regression in the UI. The initial release of the UI code assumed that if the light was RED that there was nothing playing - but the FPGA doesn’t know anything about the light and plays what shows up on its inputs. The first release of Massive fixed that, but now it’s back. I’ll check that they know about it at our next meeting.

Sigh. Regression test procedures, folks. Regression test procedures.

I am experiencing intermittent hiccups and skips since I loaded the new Massive. Could it be a software loading problem, and if so what should I do to fix? (or possibly a cable got loosened while I was inserting the thumbdrive)?

Hi Ted, :slightly_smiling_face:

I wanted to introduce myself:
I’ve been a big fan of yours and a supporter of PS Audio since the first release of the PerfectWave in 2013, my first purchase.

I’ve owned pretty much all of your DACs over the years in my system and they all sounded spectacular.

However, since I have been using the new DirectStream MK2 I have been hearing a lot of white noise reproduced by the tweeters of my XRT1Ks, and I am not talking about a small hiss but a noticeable background white noise always present at every volume. This can be perceived from my listening position starting from volume 1 of the DAC.
I temporarily alleviated the situation by attenuating the DAC output to -7db from my McIntosh MEN220.
In this way, I had found, at least with Antero, a balance that, even if it took away a lot of dynamics, allowed me to get excited listening to your spectacular new DAC.
Unfortunately, the Beta version of Massive made things significantly worse, at least on my system.
We could hear not only a very loud hiss (white noise) but also a very annoying distortion of female voices even with higher attenuation (-10db).
It sounded like a broken tweeter trying, unsuccessfully, to reproduce a completely distorted sound. (I couldn’t describe it any other way).

Now surely, in the next few days, I will have the opportunity and time to adequately test the new final version of the Massive.
Fingers crossed and hope I can get the most out of this spectacular machine!

I greet you cordially and wish you good work.
Thank you for your efforts in solving our problems.

You probably want to contact PS Audio customer support, but knowing what inputs you are using (especially if you are using USB vs I2S vs other inputs) can really help narrow things down. And is there a possibility that something was changed in your source at the same time? Anyway, it can’t hurt to load an older version of the software and then reload this version.

The things you describe are the major problem that was addressed in this release. Everyone else who had problems similar to what you describe note that this release fixes them. That doesn’t mean that there isn’t something else going on in your case, but I suspect you will be happy.

Thanks so much, Ted. :slightly_smiling_face:

Good job and I’ll let you know soon.

With esteem and respect,
Valerio.

Wow, the descriptions of the effect of Massive make me want to trade my MK1 for a MK2.
But only after a Rega P8 for the second system.
What’s the going rate for a pint of blood these days?

Thanks for the quick reply! I use I2S and coax inputs currently.

Issue is happening on both inputs. Probably a cable issue post-Dac, but my cables aren’t so accessible so I thought to ask first.

I am thinking similarly, but with time it too shall pass.

I think you will like the Rega P8 as tit is quite accomplished and rather no fuss. I enjoy mine, but at times would like to try the Rega Naia with a Rega Aura phono stage. Off to audition a Vitus RI 101 Mk II, the MSB Discrete or Premier DAC, and possibly the Vitus DAC board within the RI 101 Mk II.

My strategy has always been to wait long enough to see if the flame goes out before I make a big purchase.

We think alike, as well as for go the early adopter thing altogether.

Hi Ted,

Just for the poor or envious among us: because you only use 1/2 fpga, is it in principle possible to port the new massive firmware to the mk 1 directstream? Or is that peals before swine because of other hw limitations (or business considerations)? Otherwise I will nurture my piggy bank the next couple of years
 :grinning:

Sixpack1, same here

if i remember correctly, the initial release of mk2 only occupied 1/3 of the FPGA which was roughly the same code as mk1. Now that we’re at 1/2, I’m assuming that it won’t fit in mk1 and that they’re different chips so the code might not be plug and play.
