The Grimm MU2

All of the above…?

It’s the forum influence, of course! A post a day keeps the MU2 on the right way!

I’m listening to Rheingold (Barenboim, Bayreuth Festival) over Tidal. But thus is the first time through the MU2, which is fully burned in now.

A couple of interesting things. The Tidal stream is still MQA despite Tidal saying they were abandoning MQA this past summer. What’s up with that?

Imaging is great - - the singers especially. A bit of a surprise since I’ve heard this recording plenty of times over the years on CD and DVD and wasn’t expecting anything like this.

MU2 comrades on the forum are probably not surprised.

Cheers.

Is the MU2 capable of MQA? The MU1 is not. Just curious thank you.

Roon apparently does the work. Per the Grimm manual on settings:

MQA capabilities’ defaults to ‘No MQA support’ and that is fine. When playing an MQA stream,
the ‘unfolds’ will be performed by Roon and in ‘No MQA support’ mode Roon will not add the
MQA metadata…

Roon shows this recording as FLAC 44.1 kHz, 16 bit, MQA 44.1 kHz. The MU2 shows it as coming in at 24/88.2. (Or I should say going out at 24/88.2.)

Yes. The Grimm up sampling. The sound is quite good with the magic Grimm provides.

Whatever magic it’s doing, it’s doing well.

This is what the signal path shows.

I am actually most impressed with how good cd’s sound when decoded by the MU2. There is an extra bit of “air” when decoding cd’s that I do not hear when streaming.
I am still impressed with sound quality of streaming (Qobuz linked Roon with the MU2) (but more impressed with cd’s).

I fully agree with the “Air” comment. Silver discs get a bad rap. Vinyl as well. It might amuse you to learn I listen to vinyl through my MU2. It takes a brief hop through BACCH, then drops into the MU2. Sometimes I play the vinyl direct, no processing. It is absolutely wonderful. But the DSP stuff takes me where I want to be. Others disagree and I understand and accept this. The nice thing is, when they come to visit I can do either.
That MU1 and MU2 are easy to get used to. Settle in with even. I am not even curious about what else is out there.

Wondering if Grimm will ever release a stand alone dac for silver disc spinners? Seems like a win for Grimm…

Dear happy owners of MU2. Please clarify a couple of questions. Does the device have a button-off mode? If, for example, I leave home for a week and want to turn it off, how does this happen? Is this done through a disk on top? How do you use mu2 yourself, do you turn it off after listening to music? Is it possible to turn it off and on from the remote control?

You can download the operations manual from the website. The rear panel has small push button on/off switch. The unit remains in standby mode when on and can be engaged by the remote or disk. It has very low power draw and sounds best when powered on, so keep it on. Power down if you want for extended days without it. You can power down from the remote or disk, shutting down the display, but components are active.

I leave mine on 24/7/365.
Going away? One long press on the top disc, then a short one. Asleep it goes.
Oh, you are back now? One long press wakes it up. There is a delay as Roon doesn’t start instantly.

There is a web page interface that gives you total control on your phone or tablet. It includes a power switch.

People buy or easily program a remote. But most stop using a remote in favor of the web interface on their phone or tablet. I don’t use a remote at all with mine.

I look forward to the end of remotes in favor of phone apps. I always have a phone, but where do I pile up all the remotes?

Thank you very much for your answers. One more question. Does MU2 heat up a lot during operation? I have a fairly narrow closed shelf, literally barely a palm can fit through to press the disk. If this distance is not enough, then i will have to sort through the entire rack, which i really don’t want to do.

The unit does get warm. I would enquire with the factory as to proper ventilation. They have responded to email in the past.

Doesn’t Grimm MU2 also have a steering wheel on top of the lid? Maybe you should get your fingers between them to operate it. I also find Grimm MU2 interesting. In a recession the only question that has been asked is what will happen if Roon is shut down? Since the MU2 probably only accepts Roon and no other formats. If I could use Quboz directly I might have made up my mind.

Greetings Andreas

Yes. I have exactly the same concerns. Despite the fact that I use Roon all the time as the main system, I want to have a certain versatility for backup. Now I am in the process of choosing a device that combines a streamer, DAC and preamp in one package. I rejected Bartok because of the numerous reviews that the preamp is not the best there. Just a couple of weeks ago, the updated Meitner MA3i was launched. According to the manufacturer, the sound of the updated device has been greatly improved compared to the old version. Now I’m rushing between MU2 and competitors, weighing the pros and cons.

The Grimm MU2 needs roon in order to stream music and to play music from its hard drive or usb flash drive, but does NOT need roon to use other inputs, so if the internet was out, I can still play music from cd using the toslink, digital rca, and digital aes/ebu inputs.
