The royal slam

“I thought it was going to be about UK-made subwoofers.”

It is more of a distorted midrange annoying feedback issue.

Ok, that’s funny.

Marmite could be in trouble from the PC Brigade, along with Nutella.
Did you collect those badges you got for sending in labels from Rowntrees jam jars? Can’t mention those, either.

I think the best thing is to stay at home and lock the door … oh, I forgot …done that

The only reason why this Meghan tragedy blew up is because proper tragedies are few and far between, except for Covid, and some Royal dirt is about the only thing that can knock Covid off the front page, other than when Priti Patel opens her mouth.

Anyone think Meghan should apply to do the post-Covid sequel to Suits, renamed Pyjamas?

I’m thinking Meghan Markle is the Yoko Ono of the royal family (to keep things music related).

I saved the labels, and got the whole “golly” band.
But then, I genuinely thought they were kinda cartoon teddy bear type characters, and thought that until I was in my late teens.
Sheltered childhood.

No idea where they are now…

Also - I always liked yoko

It would be better than previous Royal appearances in dramas, I’m thinking princess Margaret in the Archers here.
The Pet Shop Boys did a better job on that program

Correct, wear a seatbelt, don’t drink & drive and don’t speed! All that said, the paparazzi were ‘a part’ of the cause in Diana Spencer’s death as much as the forementioned causes.

I repeatedly tell myself on the US side of the pond I don’t give a whit about the shenanigans of the Royals, especially Harry and oh so put upon Meghan. Yet I couldn’t resist clicking on every tabloid article today I found on US media sites.

I’m hopeless.

You are not alone.

For a thread filled with comments of “I do not care” there are a remarkable amount of posts. It is a very busy thread.

I can only imagine how hot this thread would be if people where actually interested.

I read in The Independent this morning an American commentator saying Oprah missed the point. The Royal Family is about the Country and the Commonwealth, not about Meghan.

He’s 100% correct.

Isn’t every monarchy both, a very historic matter of the country and a show that must go on, which is occasionally disturbed by some ordinary real life occurrences?

The more distance between this show and those parts of the real life, the more obvious the show character. Politics experiences similar problems occasionally.

I watched the repeat on British tv - only lasted 1.45 hours - maybe in the US it was 2 hours with lots of advert breaks.

Whatever, the ‘highlights’ I’d already seen summed up the major issues. I found it difficult to follow the timeline of things so remain confused. As stated, we don’t know the royal family’s comment and never will and the issue could have been innocent rather than dramatic.

I think the queen has a good grip on things but obviously can’t control the people that are paid to manage the monarchy. I’m glad I wasn’t born a royal, although a nice country estate would have been nice.

In their defence, not that they need defending, the Royal palaces and houses give as much public access as they can, most if not all year round. Last year we went to four of them:

The Tower of London

Buckingham Palace

Sandringham

and Balmoral

OK, that’s not Balmoral Castle, it is the huge metropolis that is Braemar, where we were staying, a few miles from Balmoral, as only the Balmoral gift shop was open.

They are not even that big, this one was built by Queen Anne for the Duke of Marlborough (from the film The Favourite) for beating assorted Europeans. This is not a Royal palace.

Even with lockdown, we had an almost personal tour of Sandringham, 15 people per hour. It is a small house.

There is a big difference between a common-or-garden palace, however big, and a bijou Royal palace. And that’s why the tourists come, thank heavens, for the history, and long may it continue. Meghan will be a molehill in the scheme of things.

i am, in theory, not a monarchist. however i’m not sure i fancy a presidential system either. Queen seems better than most, and my elderly mother thinks she’s wonderful (she lived in east london as a child during the Blitz and i think that has a lot to do with it).

more to the point we have bigger problems to fix than “what do we do with the monarchy”, stating with e.g. press ownership, and possibly Levenson2,
and a whole bunch of other stuff that would get too political for this forum

I have about as much interest in the “royal family” as I do u.s. politicians, which is zero.

The Queen is cool or has good consultants. At least the few times I observed her reactions I liked them.
